INThat is quite the optical trick! What you’re seeing in this video is a perfect example of relative motion.
While it looks like that pole is a giant ice-breaker slicing through the water at high speed, the pole is actually stationary—firmly anchored to the lakebed. The "illusion" is caused by a massive, continuous sheet of thin ice being pushed across the lake by strong winds or currents.
As the ice moves, it collides with the fixed pole, shattering into countless shards with that distinct, rhythmic "clinking" sound. Because the camera is tracking the pole and the background is relatively uniform, our brains struggle to process that the entire horizon of ice is what's actually moving. It’s essentially the same feeling you get when you’re sitting on a stationary train and the train next to you starts to move, making you feel like you’re rolling backward!
