Listen to your guide. Seriously. The rocks are sharp and it’s VERY easy to scrape yourself up! But once you slide through and the lagoon on the other side opens up… no words. We’ll never get over this moment. The clip shows a shallow trench dug through sand, allowing water from a small coastal stream or lagoon to flow into the ocean. This is not a river being “broken” or redirected in any geological sense. In many coastal areas, especially in California, sand naturally builds up at river mouths due to waves and tides. When pressure builds behind the sandbar, even a small opening can release the water, creating a fast flowing channel that looks dramatic on camera. The water was already destined for the ocean. The trench simply removed a temporary barrier. This process happens naturally after storms, heavy rain, or tidal changes, and is sometimes manually assisted by local authorities to prevent flooding inland. It does not alter river paths, watersheds, or ocean systems. The illusion comes from scale and framing. Close up footage makes a shallow stream look powerful, but the forces involved are ordinary gravity and coastal hydrology. Nothing was broken. Nothing was rerouted.
