I can’t leave the LDS church and here’s why👇🏽 1️⃣ My family I grew up in the church and all of my extended family did too. To leave the church would leave behind a major cultural pillar of my family..it would also take away my children’s ability to be raised in the gospel 2️⃣ Hell I’d have to believe that God created people with the intention of sending them to Hell. LDS theology has a much better answer 3️⃣ Miracles, Gifts of the Spirit Leaving the church would mean seeing less miracles and gifts of the spirit which have BLESSED my life immensely 4️⃣ God Heavenly Father has shown me TOO MUCH to leave His church. I’ve been given spiritual witness of the truthfulness of His gospel and to abandon that would be abandoning Him 5️⃣ It’s true! I’d have to give up the rights to the priesthood, holy scriptures, saving ordinances, and everything that comes with Jesus’s restored church. I can’t leave something knowing it’s true! I’m here to stay and so should you 🙏🏽 #lds #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints #mormon #exmo #exmormon

Lots of people have lots to say about the Bible. Loads of conspiracy theories exist about it. Whether it’s conspiracy theories about its creation, or lost books that didn’t make the cut, or obscure interpretations seen by a select few as prophecy about our modern world, not a day goes by that someone, somewhere isn’t holding the Bible up to the light and seeing if we missed anything. Beyond that, so-called biblical literalism has been the basis of support for a lot of pretty heinous parts of our country’s past and present. From regulating the sale of alcohol to vilifying interracial marriage and queer identity to demonizing immigrants to supporting slavery, supposed biblical scholars have found a way to twist the Bible in such a way that it is a timeless scapegoat for current hatred. All of this turns a lot of people off from not just modern Christianity, but of religion in general. Few scholars wish to use their time, energy, and knowledge to combat the misinformation and vitriol online. But, thankfully, my guest today does just that. Dan McClellan is a scripture translation supervisor for the LDS church, with a PhD in theology and religion. He ran for the State Senate as a Democrat in Utah. He is a fierce ally of the queer community, a debunker of conspiracy theories, and a Marvel fan. We had a lot to talk about.

Some call it a "high demand religion", I call it home. When the rich young man asked Jesus what he could do to help the kingdom, Jesus told him to go and sell all that he had and follow Him. Unfortunately he went away mourning because the true desire and treasure of his heart was not Jesus, it was his comfortable life. Every sacrifice I offer, be it time or tithes or talents, is not a deficit to me because I love Him! I truly desire to follow Him and live in covenant relationship with Him, to serve Him and His children. It's an honor to be a part of His work on the earth today, to help gather scattered Israel, to be part of the final chapter. I love my Savior, I love His church, I love His word. #churchofjesuschrist #mormon #ldschurch #churchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints

This one is for anyone specifically who saw the advertisement for The Bachelorette that said, “leave the garments at home,” or for anyone who heard on the intro sequence on the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives when they said, “originally, we wanted to move from the outdated LDS ways,” or the news headline they flashed on screen that said, “the younger members of the Utah LDS church are seeing garments as optional…? Is this trending?” …and wondered what the heck they were talking about. I don’t believe that temple garments are a trend. They really are a reminder to me of the relationship I have with God, and the stuff I promised Him I’d do. The first few years I had my garments, I struggled to want to wear them. I would find every excuse to put on and stay in workout clothes all day, or in a swimsuit in the summer. That has changed over time. Being in the temple frequently has helped me develop more of a relationship with God. And just like any relationship, the closer you are to someone, the more love you feel toward them. And so now I wear my garments out of love for God, very willingly, and happily. I know this isn’t the same for everyone else. We are all on different journeys in life and I believe everyone is showing up to life just doing their best. Garments are tricky because it’s a visual thing that’s really easy to judge. But there are so many other things that everyone is or isn’t doing that you can’t see, and at the end of the day, it’s between them and God. In the recovery world, we like to say, “keep your side of the street clean.” I promise life gets easier when you remember to just worry about yourself. Follow along to learn more about why I’m happy to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 🥰

In no order… but 3️⃣ may be most interesting to Catholics First, My Question: The Hymns seemed to carry a solemn and heavier tone. What’s the purpose in that? Very different than other churches. ————————————————— 1️⃣ Diversity + Community It’s beautiful the amount of diversity in the congregation. You don’t see that in LDS churches where I’m from. There isn’t a standard that you have to be like and hold to. No pressure to fit the mold. Shown clearly in the words “Christ bled for all” at the center of the cathedral. I really loved the “peace be with you” when everyone greets their neighbors. (The LDS church should do this) 2️⃣ Devotion I’ve never come face to face with catholic devotion until now. They burn with passion!! I’ve learned that Cathloics always consider themselves Catholics whether they are very devout or not. It’s an identity. Interestingly, when people leave the LDS church they LEAVE. Inactive members don’t usually consider themselves Mormon (in my experience). It’s usually full fellowship or no association. (obviously there’s nuance) 3️⃣ Communion/Eucharist Central to the Mass. Having been very involved in the LDS faith, I find similarities to the sacrament and even some Temple worship and traditions. It seems to me like different faiths may use different practices but all seem to be getting at the same result: a taking in of the Lord’s spirit and realignment with Him. So, it still begs the question: who’s right? Or does that not matter if we’re all trying to do the same thing? That’s all :) peace and love ❤️ #god #catholic #mass #jesus #religion

Truth is the enemy of Mormonism. They have to demonize all truth to keep their beliefs safe. I’ve seen a lot of people saying recently that the Mormon church is just going to abandon all of its uniqueness to stay afloat as “just another Christian denomination” (as it is endeavoring to do), but they will never be able to fully distance themselves from the three things that keep them permanently excluded from genuine Christianity: Joseph Smith, Mormon scripture (the BoM, D&C, PoGP), and Temples. They will continue to forsake LDS culture and seemingly unimportant Mormon beliefs (like the Word of Wisdom and Temple garments), but the LDS church’s days are still numbered because it’s a lie, and all lies have a shelf life.

We were unwilling to “stand trial” for my work in LDS faith crisis healing…and for our public podcast that respectfully talks about the LDS church and how teachings and practices contribute to either the psychological thriving and/or harm to some church members. The Latter Day Struggles podcast and various groups guide you through the process of adjusting to your own spiritual growth & encourages you to embody whatever relationship with the divine and with the LDS Church that feels right to you as you learn to trust your on divine intuition and come to see spirituality as deeply personal. We are still going strong & beyond grateful for the growth we’ve experienced due to your generosity and support—especially during this past challenging year. I do not run my faith crisis helping groups quite as often anymore but I AM enrolling for my ONLY 2026 daytime group RIGHT NOW. Interested in trying it out? Jump into my “pop up group” TOMORROW 3/18/26 at 9:30a Pacific. There you’ll get a taste of what my groups feel like and I’ll answer your questions. Check out the link in my bio to get zoom info. Joseph Smith founded the LDS Church and this is the story of what followed: how mormons planned to expand into the west, how other prophets rose up and polygamy took over, the tension between them and the US government, and finally, how Utah came to be.
