ANThe secret ingredient to a top turn is actually a bottom turn - because your bottom turn sets you up for the turn you want to do on the top part of the wave.
In this case, @kabo__mohamed saw that the wave he was on was not very steep.
Which means, he would have not been able to do a fast snappy turn on the lip (the top of the wave).
So, he planned his bottom turn knowing he was going to perform a long, drawn out cut back on the face of the wave - because that’s what you do on a wave that’s not very steep.
He first drew enough speed off his bottom turn by compressing his legs into the turn, and extending them out of the turn.
Now he’s up at the top of the wave, and because of his long bottom turn, he’s not going straight up the face of the wave, but rather at an angle.
The speed that he got from his bottom turn allows him to continue the long drawn cut back, coming back down the face of the wave at an angle.
This is a perfect example of doing the right turn on the right wave.
If he tried to turn very sharply on his bottom turn, and go vertically up the wave, he would have lost a lot of his speed - because there’s no vertical part of the wave in this case, to push the board back.
How do you know which is the right turn to make ?
The steeper the wave is, the more vertical you can make your turns.
How do you figure it out ?
By studying the wave as you paddling into it - aka down the line vision.
This is what sets apart beginners and intermediate, to advanced surfers.
It all comes down to ocean knowledge and reading the waves.
