GWAs you guys know from my last video, yesterday we found a HARLEQUIN BEETLE!!! Acrocinus longimanus. It is one of my favorite insects of all time, that I have wanted to see forever. But the harlequin beetle came with a surprise: hiding under its elytra were many pseudoscorpions! They are sometimes phoretic, aka neutral relationship, and sometimes symbiotic. This may actually be a symbiotic relationship here, because large Cerambycids often have mites on them, so the pseudoscorps will live on them and eat off their parasites. What do you think?

KETo me personally, yellowjackets look like little luxury sports cars! I especially love the look of this Common Aerial Yellowjacket (Dolichovespula arenaria) that I caught. Yellowjackets, like many other wasp species that live in colonies, construct their nests from collecting wood that they chew and mix using their saliva. The mixture is called wood pulp and the queen will be the first one to begin the construction of the nest during early spring. Yellowjackets are beneficial pollinators and are useful in the spreading of many fruit plants. They are also excellent predators for a whole host of insects, many of which can be pests for farmers and gardeners. When threatened, Common Aerial Yellowjacket females will deliver a venomous sting to their potential threat. Like many other species of wasps who are defensive when a perceived enemy enters near their nest, worker Common Aerial Yellowjackets will deliver a series of continuous stings until their foe retreats. One interesting ability that these yellowjacket species possess is a defense known as venom spraying. While workers are residing on the outside of their nest, they’ll spray their venom out from their stingers in a mist from birds who typically feed on insects! This form of deterrent can be very effective if the mist of venom gets into the mouth, eyes, and nasal passages of the bird. *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio! SNThis gnarly fella is a giant longhorn beetle or the imperious sawyer, with a Latin binomial of Enplocerus armilatus. Males such as the individual above sport huge mandibles and a long pair of antennae, giving them their name. How crazy is that!?
Found throughout Central and South America, this species is primarily fungi feeding. For sure they are some of the freakiest beetles out there. Would you want to pick this guy up?

KEFor years, I’ve been searching for a Southern Yellowjacket (Vespula squamosa) to film a video of. Just recently, I was finally able to find one! Not only did I find the wasp species I’ve been wanting to catch for years, the one that I caught was a queen Southern Yellowjacket! Yellowjackets, like many other wasp species that live in colonies, construct their nests from collecting wood that they chew and mix using their saliva. The mixture is called wood pulp and the queen will be the first one to begin the construction of the nest during early spring. These wasps are carnivorous and will feed on a variety of different insects and spiders for their diet. Not too commonly seen, but yellowjackets have also been shown to feed on the carcasses of dead animals as well! When threatened, Southern Yellowjacket females will release alarm pheromones that trigger other females to fly out of the nest to attack the perceived threat.
