Use this position for 5-30 minutes. Work up gradually and see how you feel. Leg elevation is great for the entire body. Because it improves circulation, it helps to reduce swelling in the lower extremities through redirecting lymph and other fluids from your ankles, knees, and pelvic organs. It relaxes the body and deactivates the stress response of the sympathetic nervous system. This pose benefits the Heart by giving it a rest as it doesn’t have to pump so hard and it slows down your heart rate. Begin with your right side against the wall and bend the knees. Draw your feet towards your hips and swing your legs against the wall, turning to lie flat on your back. Have your hips against the wall or slightly away. Place your arms in any comfortable position. To release the pose, gently push yourself away from the wall. Relax on your back for a few moments before rolling to your right side. Wellness Wednesday Tip: 🦵 ⬆️ the Wall Posture! Ever since my 🦶injury, I have been following this protocol to help relieve pain and swelling in my feet and legs. It's truly the greatest thing since sliced 🍞! ☀️ and 🌙, I elevate my legs up the wall for 10-30 minutes. This is my time to re-center, take a breath, and prepare or wind down for the day. And this is for everyone; people who are constantly standing or seated for the most part of the day. Benefits include: 1| Reduce swelling - lack of elevation causes a buildup of swelling in your legs and feet. 2| Relieves pressure - Standing for long periods of time puts pressure on your veins, which can cause pain in your legs and feet. 3| Improves blood circulation - Your veins are working overtime to pump blood back to your heart when you're standing or sitting with your legs on the floor. 4| Muscle tension relief - Perfect if you have tension in the lower body (i.e. lower back, hips, legs, and feet) 5| Lymphatic drainage- Lymph fluid is excreted from our cells and carries toxins away to be eliminated by the spleen. Lymph fluid can stagnate in the lower limbs because the lymphatic system doesn't have a pump to move the fluid around the body. This pose improves drainage so these toxins can be eliminated from the body. 6| Calm the nervous system - Since this pose requires little work from the body, it's intended to be a deep and relaxing pose. So when you combine slow, rhythmic breathing, you're tapping into your parasympathetic "rest and digest" nervous system. With that said, the benefits continue! For example, when your body taps into the parasympathetic state, a domino effect happens - digestion improves, stress and anxiety is lowered, high blood pressure can lower due to the relaxation response, etc! How to elevate your legs: Above the ❤️- Elevate your legs high enough to be above the heart. So whether that is laying down and elevating your legs on a couple of pillows or up the wall. Elevate in intervals - Spend 10-30 minutes a day to increase twice a day, depending on severity. Adjust the frequency - when the pain and swelling get better, you can elevate less frequently!
