GRLinus Torvalds recently criticized companies that measure engineers by the number of lines of code they write, calling it one of the most misleading metrics in tech. His stance is simple: more code does not equal more value. In fact, some of the best engineers reduce thousands of lines into a few efficient ones.
During the interview, Torvalds didn’t realize the question referred to Elon Musk’s early approach at Twitter, where developers were asked to print code and justify their output. When told, he replied, “Apparently I was spot-on,” reinforcing how flawed the idea is across the industry. Great engineering is measured by clarity, stability, and impact, not volume.
This moment is a reminder that productivity in software comes from problem-solving, debugging, and designing systems that scale. Writing 200 lines means nothing if 20 lines can achieve the same result. The future of tech belongs to those who prioritize quality over quantity.

In this 2012 Aalto Talk, Linus Torvalds admits something that still frustrates him today:
Linux dominates servers, infrastructure, supercomputers — even phones — but desktop adoption never reached the level he expected.
He points to Android as proof that Linux did succeed at scale.
At the time, Google was activating 900,000 Android devices every single day — powered by the Linux kernel.
That’s not a small win.
That’s global dominance.
But for Linus, it’s bittersweet.
Linux runs the world quietly… just not on most people’s laptops.
And that contrast still “annoys the hell out of him.”
Sometimes the biggest victories don’t look the way you imagined.
