Parents ask me this allll the time: “Is this a lisp?” A true lisp is a distortion of the S and Z sounds – tongue between the teeth, pressed on the teeth, air spilling over the sides, or pulled too far back so it sounds more like “sh.” If your child says “fink” for think or “dis” for this… that’s a TH substitution, not a lisp. Both can make speech harder to understand, and both are worth checking out with a speech therapist but we treat them differently in therapy. Save this to replay the different lisp sounds and share with a parent or teacher who may have the same question “lisp.” 💛 #speechtherapy #lisp #speechsounds #articulation #slp #slpmom #parenttips #earlyintervention #funlearningathome

Type LINK in the comments if you want a DM with the link to my course where I give you all the steps you need to implement this method…. using phonetic shaping and cognitive reframing.💡 So why don’t I ever work on S when there’s a lateral lisp? Because it’s so much easier to teach a “new” sound rather than explain to how to “fix” or “tweak” a sound they’ve habituated in error. That’s why my Lateral Lisp Deck from @bjoremspeech by has an ❌ thru the 🐍… because I’m NOT trying to correct their “snake sound” (AKA: lateral S), I’m teaching them a new sound altogether… the “flat tire” sound (AKA: non-lateralized S). 🛞💨 I’ve used this method with 3-year-olds through adults with tons of success… including several family members 😅. If you have any lateral lispers that you’re struggling with, you NEED this course! #grahamspeechtherapy #laterallisp #grahamspeechlaterallisptherapy #lisp #articulation #speechsounddisorders

🐍 Does your child have a lisp? You’re not alone and there are ways to help! The /s/ sound is one of the trickier ones and most kids don’t fully master it until ages 5–7. But if a lisp sticks around, there are simple things you can start doing right now to support clearer speech: 👄 Model it slowly – Let them hear a clear, crisp /s/ 👅 Talk about the tongue – Try saying: “Let’s keep our tongue hiding behind the cage (our teeth)!” 🪞 Use a mirror – Let them see what their mouth should do Progress takes time... and playful practice goes a long way 💫 👇 Want to know if your child’s speech sounds are on track? A lisp is a common speech impediment where a person has difficulty pronouncing ‘s’ and ‘z’ sounds, often making them sound slushy , wet, or like a ‘th’ sound, due to incorrect tongue placement (like poking out between the teeth) when forming these sounds. Common Causes • Tongue Placement: The tongue might stick out between or in front of the teeth instead of resting behind them. • Oral Muscle Weakness: Muscles in the tongue or mouth might not be strong enough. • Learned Habit: A child might simply learn to make the sound differently. • Physical Factors: In some cases, a tongue-tie (frenulum) or dental issues can contribute. • Habitual Pacifier/Thumb Use: Prolonged use may affect muscle development. Therapy Techniques Tongue Placement: SLPs teach precise tongue positioning, often behind the front teeth, for /s/ and /z/ sounds. Mirror Work: Watching mouth movements in a mirror helps individuals see and adjust their tongue and lip positions. Tactile Cues: Using physical guidance or touch to feel where the tongue should go. Airflow Control: For lateral lisps, exercises direct air forward, sometimes using straws or by prolonging /t/ sounds (like “t-t-t-t-t-s”). Consult us if your child’s lisp persists past age 4 or 5, if speech is generally hard to understand. #ableuk #ableukdubai #childdevelopment #speechtherapy #overwhelmedchildren #oralplacementtherapy #beckmanstretches #oralmotortherapy #lisp #languageskills

Sorry but this is the truth. Lip-reading takes a lot of concentration and lipreading for long period of time is likely to cause concentration fatigue, put strain on our brain. If I lipread you, did you try to sign back? If not, why don’t you? It takes both ways to make an effort from either side. Learning basic BSL can really go long way, thanks for being here and willing to get involved. Love, India. #bsl #signlanguage #deafcommunity #lipreading

Lisping is a speech difference where a person say certain sounds like, most commonly /s/ and /z/ in an unusual way. This happens because the tongue is not in its typical position when making the sound, which changes how the sound comes out. Normally, for /s/ and /z/ sounds, the tongue tip is placed close to the alveolar ridge (just behind the upper front teeth) that is >>> without touching the teeth, and air flows straight down the middle. #lisp #lisping #speech #speaking #english #speechtherapy

When I start to interact with a hearing person, the hearing person automatically asks me this question… “Can you read lips?” When a hearing person asks that particular question, it does unintentionally put a burden on the Deaf person to read lips, to accommodate the hearing person. There is this assumption that Deaf people are magical lip readers when that’s far from the truth. Didn’t you know that lip reading is mostly a guessing game and has a low accuracy rate? The better question to ask the Deaf person is “What is the best way to communicate?” Because not every Deaf person is the same. #deaf #deafawareness #communicationiskey #signlanguage #americansignlanguage

Can I lip read?? This is a common question I get a lot. My answer is mainly no but I would say I can lip read around 20% of words. However if you throw a few signs in with the lip reading it gives me context to understand the words and pick them up faster. You guys…. Lip reading is HARD. I’ve done a lot of hard things and I’d like to think of myself as a pretty educated person that picks up skills quickly. Well not this one. It is a talent. It’s exhausting because my brain is picking up every clue you can give me to piece the words together. Maybe it’s just me but I have a lot of respect for those who can lip read cause it’s like one of her hardest things I’ve ever done. Much respect. 🙌🏻 #signlanguage #deaf #asl #deafcommunity #deafculture #americansignlanguage #deaftalents #deafawareness #deafworld # #deafness #deafpeople #deaflove #deafpride #hardofhearing #learnasl #deafeducation #hearingaids #nf2biosolutions #deafvideo #love #deaflife #deaftravel #signing #sign #deafgirl #nf #nf2 #deaftech #deaftechnology

Lipreading might seem like an easy way to communicate, but it’s not always as simple as it looks. Around 30-40% of speech sounds look the same on your lips, making it tough to catch everything accurately. Missing context or background noise only makes it harder. It’s not just about reading lips—it’s about putting all the pieces together. #lipreadingstruggles #communicationmatters #notthatsimple #reels #explore #explorepage #signlanguage #itskeene #asl
