The is the wildest machine you’ve never heard of and it powers all of AI. Here’s a crazy question: how do we print billions of transistors onto a chip when each one is smaller than a grain of dust? The answer is EUV lithography, and it’s absolutely wild. EUV stands for Extreme Ultraviolet lithography. It uses light so tiny, just 13.5 nanometers, that normal mirrors don’t even work. “So where do you even get light that small?” Inside an EUV machine, droplets of molten tin are fired into a vacuum. A laser hits each droplet once to flatten it, and again to vaporize it into a plasma that emits EUV light. That’s right: the core of modern chips starts with exploding tin droplets. “But how do you shape that into a transistor pattern?” Because EUV is so energetic, lenses would absorb it. So ASML uses ultra smooth multilayer mirrors, the flattest objects humans have ever made, to guide the light through a complex system of reflections. These mirrors project a chip pattern onto a photoresist layer on a silicon wafer. “So how small are we talking?” Each exposure prints features just a few nanometers wide. The wafer gets coated, exposed, developed, etched… and after dozens of layers, you get billions of perfectly aligned transistors. And that is EUV lithography: exploding tin, extreme light, atomically perfect mirrors, chips that power the entire AI world. #tech #techexplained #stem

An Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machine, built by ASML, is one of the most advanced machines ever created. It uses extremely short-wavelength light (13.5 nanometers) to print incredibly tiny transistor patterns onto silicon wafers, enabling the production of the world’s most powerful microchips. The system combines high-energy lasers, plasma physics, ultra-precise mirrors made by Carl Zeiss SMT, vacuum engineering, and nanometer-level motion control. Each machine weighs around 180 tons, contains over 100,000 parts, and costs hundreds of millions of dollars. It is widely considered the most complex commercial manufacturing machine in the world and a critical technology behind modern processors and AI chips. China has just broken the monopoly of the world’s most insane company. ASML. China just successfully produced ultraviolet lithography for AI technology, which is the technology that makes every advanced AI chip on the planet. That one machine costs over 250 million dollars. But now China has reportedly cracked the code for the most complex part of this machine, which is extreme ultraviolet lithography, or EUV. Now it’s not perfect yet. It can generate UV light, but it still cannot mass produce fully working chips. ASML took almost 20 years to figure this out, and China built this prototype in just six years. Sources describe former ASML engineers helping reverse engineer some parts of the system, and Huawei helped coordinate efforts across labs and suppliers. And as China is already way ahead of the US in power production, their next aim is to eventually make advanced chips that are entirely produced in China. And if China manages to perfect this, the entire global chip supply chain could flip overnight. What part do you think India can play in this whole thing, lmk in the comments and follow for more such stories.

This is how the future gets printed. 🧠⚡ What you’re watching happens at the nanoscale — billions of transistors etched with near-atomic precision to power AI, data centers, autonomous systems, smartphones, and the modern digital world. No chips. No computing power. No AI revolution. Behind every breakthrough model, every automation, and every smart system… there’s silicon engineered at a scale the human eye can’t even see. 🔬 While most people focus on apps and tools, the real foundation of AI starts inside semiconductor fabs where the world’s most advanced chips are made.

The post shares a 49-second video featuring the precise, mechanical operation of an automated handwriting machine as it flawlessly replicates human script using a standard pen. The clip has gone viral for its "end of an era" energy, with a humorous caption joking that while you’re out here struggling to read your own handwriting five minutes after writing a grocery list, this machine is out here applying for your job with better penmanship than a 17th-century poet. This visual is a demonstration of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) plotting and robotic calligraphy. Unlike standard inkjet printers, these machines use actual writing instruments to create a "human" feel, varying pressure and speed to mimic the natural flow of ink on paper. This technology is increasingly used for high-volume tasks that require a personal touch, such as signing diplomas, wedding invitations, or direct mail marketing. The precision shown highlights the narrowing gap between mechanical execution and human creative expression. This content has amassed 10 million views and 94,000 likes, with audience members in the comments debating whether this is "neat or scary" and others wondering if their future boss will be a ballpoint pen attached to a motor.

ASML is a Dutch company that builds a single machine critical to nearly every advanced semiconductor made today. That machine is the EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography system, used to print extraordinarily tiny patterns onto silicon wafers. These patterns form the transistors and interconnects that power smartphones, AI systems, laptops, and large-scale data centers. What makes ASML unique is that no other company on Earth can build this system. EUV lithography requires breakthroughs in optics, plasma physics, vacuum engineering, and precision manufacturing at atomic scales. Decades of research and a tightly controlled global supply chain make it virtually impossible to replicate. As a result, leading chipmakers including TSMC, Samsung, and Intel all depend on ASML’s EUV tools to manufacture chips at 5 nm, 3 nm, and beyond. Without ASML, modern computing, advanced AI, and the entire cutting edge of digital technology would simply stop progressing.

ASML builds the machine that quietly sits behind almost every smartphone on the planet, meaning that nearly every modern chip today comes from a system that was physically assembled in a single facility. @casper_mebius from @veritasium got an extremely rare look inside that machine. It is ASML’s EUV lithography system, which costs around €350 million, pulls in components from roughly 5,000 suppliers, and is shipped in hundreds of crates by plane and truck due to its size and precision. Every company making the most advanced chips depends on it, including TSMC, Intel, and Samsung, since there is no alternative and ASML controls the entire EUV market. The first working prototype in 2006 could process just one wafer every 23 hours, while today’s machines reach around 200 wafers per hour after more than 30 years of development, a race that competitors like Canon and Nikon eventually walked away from. Inside the machine, 50,000 droplets of molten tin per second are hit with lasers to create plasma hotter than the sun, emitting extreme ultraviolet light that is guided by mirrors made by Zeiss, often described as the most precise surfaces ever produced. Without this process, modern smartphones, AI chips, and advanced processors simply would not exist. What are your thoughts on this? 🤔💬 (🎥: @veritasium)

ASML isn’t a household name, but it sits at the center of modern technology. The Dutch company builds extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines — the only tools capable of producing the world’s most advanced chips. Each machine costs more than $200 million, with complexity so high no competitor has come close to replicating it. By 2025, Apple, Nvidia, Intel, Samsung, and every major chipmaker depend on ASML’s machines. Without them, Moore’s Law slows, smartphones stall, AI chips disappear, and cloud computing grinds to a halt. China has poured billions into developing alternatives, but so far, no one has succeeded. 👉 Follow @business.boomerang for more
