Your servers will die without this. Load Balancer = Traffic Cop -Sits in front of your backend servers -Distributes incoming requests across multiple identical servers -When one server dies → sends traffic elsewhere automatically Core Job: Availability + Performance -Health Checks → pings servers, removes dead ones -Distribute Load → round-robin, least connections, IP hash -Scale Out → add servers → LB automatically finds them 3 Real Patterns You'll Build: -Round Robin → request 1→serverA, 2→serverB, 3→serverA -Least Connections → send to whoever has fewest active requests -IP Hash → same user always hits same server (session stickiness) When one dies → 0 downtime. Production Checklist: ✅ Health check endpoint returns HTTP 200 ✅ All servers identical (same code/version) ✅ Sticky sessions only if you must (stateless = better) ✅ Monitor LB metrics (connections, 5xx errors) One Line Rule: Load Balancer = redundancy + distribution. What is Load Balancer? Explained with examples When we scale an application — especially using horizontal scaling — instead of making a single server more powerful, we add multiple servers. Each server has its own unique IP address. Now the problem is: From the client side, it is not practical to manage multiple IP addresses. A client can only call a single IP address or domain. If heavy traffic comes, the client cannot distribute that traffic across multiple servers. It will keep sending all requests to one particular IP address. To solve this problem, we use a Load Balancer. We place the Load Balancer between the client and the servers. The IP address (or domain) of the Load Balancer is configured on the client side. Now what happens? Whenever the client sends a request: 1. The request first goes to the Load Balancer. 2. The Load Balancer receives the request. 3. It distributes the traffic across multiple servers. For example, if the Load Balancer is using the Round Robin algorithm: - First request → Server 1 - Second request → Server 2 - Third request → Server 3 - Fourth request → Server 1 again This way, traffic is evenly distributed across all servers. Advantages of Load Balancer: 1. High Availability – If one server fails, other servers can handle the traffic. 2. Scalability – We can add more servers when traffic increases, without downtime. 3. Better Performance – Traffic is evenly distributed, preventing overload on a single server. Disadvantages of Load Balancer: 1. Single Point of Failure – If the Load Balancer itself fails and is not redundant, the entire application can go down. 2. Increased Complexity – Managing Load Balancers adds system complexity. 3. Higher Cost – Infrastructure and maintenance costs may increase. In simple words, a Load Balancer distributes incoming traffic across multiple servers to improve availability, scalability, and performance. Follow for more #coding #systemdesign

Not every request goes to the same server. Imagine all traffic trying to use one lane. It would collapse. So someone stands in the middle and directs the flow. Left. Right. Alternate. Backend systems work the same way. When you replicate servers, you don’t send every request to a single machine. A load balancer sits in front. It distributes incoming traffic across multiple servers. This prevents overload. Improves availability. Keeps response times stable. Because scaling isn’t just adding more servers. It’s directing traffic intelligently. This is called Load Balancing. #DatabaseSeries #LoadBalancing #BackendEngineering #SystemDesign #ScalableSystems

Tips for Maintaining Uptime/Real Time and SLA in Data Center Infrastructure Ensuring uptime and meeting SLA commitments in a data center is not just about technology—it’s about disciplined operational management. The key lies in combining resilient infrastructure design, proactive monitoring, and well-structured maintenance procedures. Understanding Uptime and SLA • Uptime: The percentage of time a system or server remains operational and accessible. A common benchmark is 99.9% uptime, which translates to less than 9 hours of downtime per year. • SLA (Service Level Agreement): A formal contract between service providers and customers that defines guaranteed service levels, often expressed as uptime percentages. Strategies to Maintain Uptime and SLA. 1. Redundant Infrastructure Design • Implement power redundancy (UPS, generators, dual power supply). • Ensure network redundancy with multiple connection paths. • Provide cooling system backups to maintain stable server temperatures. 2. Proactive Monitoring • Deploy 24/7 monitoring tools to detect anomalies early. • Use automated alerts to notify technical teams instantly. • Conduct capacity planning to anticipate traffic spikes. #adtech #digitaltransformation #adtechofficial #ptabbasydigitalteknologi #itsolutions

In a distributed system behind a load balancer, consistently routing requests from the same client to a specific service instance is known as instance stickiness or session affinity. This typically happens when session or user state is stored locally on the service instance, such as in memory or local storage. Because the state exists only on that machine, subsequent requests must be routed back to the same instance to maintain continuity. While this approach simplifies session handling, it introduces several scalability, reliability, and operational challenges in distributed microservices architectures. Why Consistent Routing to the Same Instance Is Problematic First, it limits horizontal scalability. If a high-traffic user is always routed to the same instance, that instance becomes overloaded while others remain underutilized. Load balancing can no longer distribute traffic evenly across the cluster. Second, it reduces load balancer effectiveness. Load balancers are designed to spread requests across instances to maximize throughput and resource utilization. Session affinity prevents this, creating hotspots and uneven capacity usage. Third, it weakens fault tolerance. If the specific instance holding the user’s session fails, the session is lost. The user may be logged out or experience errors even though other instances are healthy. Fourth, it complicates autoscaling. When new instances are added to handle increased load, existing sticky sessions remain bound to old instances. The newly added capacity cannot help with existing traffic, reducing the benefit of scaling. Fifth, it creates deployment and maintenance risks. Rolling deployments or instance replacements become difficult because active sessions are tied to specific nodes. Draining or restarting an instance disrupts users connected to it. For scalable distributed systems, a core principle is that any service instance should be able to handle any request at any time. Example: Continued in comments #systemdesign #highleveldesign

Your servers' best friend: The Load Balancer. ⚖️💻 . Think of an LB as a smart manager at a busy restaurant, directing customers to free tables so no waiter gets overwhelmed. Why every DevOps Engineer needs this: ✅ Scalability: Add more servers without downtime. ✅ Reliability: If one server dies, the LB keeps the site live. ✅ Security: Acts as the first line of defense. #DevOps #LoadBalancer #AWS #CloudComputing #systemdesign

A 503 from a Load Balancer typically means no healthy upstream or backend saturation. My response would be structured and time-bound: 1️⃣ Confirm Scope & Blast Radius Check LB metrics (5xx count, target health, surge queue). Identify: Is it AZ-specific? Instance-specific? API-specific? Validate if this is a spike or sustained degradation. 2️⃣ Check Target Health Immediately Inspect health checks (HTTP code, timeout, path mismatch). See if instances are marked Unhealthy. Validate readiness/liveness endpoints (especially in Kubernetes). 3️⃣ Backend Capacity & Saturation CPU, memory, thread pools, DB connections. Check autoscaling events — did scaling fail? Look for connection pool exhaustion or GC pauses. 4️⃣ Rollback / Mitigation If recent deployment → rollback immediately. Temporarily increase capacity. Shift traffic (if multi-region / blue-green available). 5️⃣ Dependency Verification Database latency? Redis cache down? External API timeouts? A 503 is rarely the problem. It’s a symptom of unhealthy upstream systems. In interviews, they’re not testing tools. They’re testing your structured incident response thinking. #SystemDesign #DevOps #BackendEngineering #SRE #TechInterviews 🚀 follow&Ready to level up your career, SystemmDesign ,tech leadership, and financial mindset.
