This morning I picked up this sub adult loggerhead from some boaters who reported her floating She was COVERED in epibiota, which is the barnacles, shrimp and organisms you see all over her skin and carapace (shell) This happens when a sea turtle is sick and floating at the surface for extended amounts of time. Some epibiota growth is normal but this amount of growth is an anomaly. Barnacles can attach to her slow moving body and over time more and more larval organisms attach and begin to feed off of her and the other organisms calling her home. She was taken to a sea turtle rehab facility for care and hopefully will be successfully rehabilitated and returned home to the wild soon All sea turtle work is FWC permitted. If you encounter an injured or sick sea turtle in the state of Florida please call 888-404-FWCC to talk to a biologist for guidance. #seaturtles #floridawildlife #seaturtleconservation

Rescue Update: Loggerhead Sea Turtle Covered in Epibiota This morning, boaters spotted a sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle floating listlessly and alerted our team. Upon retrieval, we found her **completely covered in epibiota**—a dense layer of barnacles, shrimp, and other organisms clinging to her skin and carapace (shell). While small amounts of epibiota are normal for sea turtles, **this extreme overgrowth signals a serious health issue**. When turtles are ill or injured, they become lethargic and spend too much time floating at the surface. Their slowed movement allows barnacle larvae and other opportunistic organisms to colonize their bodies. Over time, these hitchhikers multiply, feeding off the turtle and each other, further weakening their host. The turtle is now at a specialized rehab facility, where she’ll receive critical care to regain strength and shed the harmful organisms. With proper treatment, we’re hopeful she’ll make a full recovery and return to her ocean home. **Why this matters**: Epibiota overload is a visible reminder of how vulnerable sick sea turtles are. Rescues like this highlight the importance of community reporting and expert rehabilitation in giving these animals a second chance. . . . . . #seaturtles #floridawildlife #seaturtleconservation

Mote recently released two loggerhead sea turtles back into the big blue 🌊 after receiving care in Mote’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital 🏥 🐢 “Local” was found floating on the south side of Venice Jetty, covered in epibiota indicating the animal may have been having buoyancy issues for some time and experiencing signs of debilitated turtle syndrome. When brought to Mote’s Hospital the animal’s blood work showed severe anemia and was given iron injections along with subcutaneous fluids to help remedy this. Local continued to eat all the food offered and its diet slowly increased each day! 🐢 “Artemis” was found floating 100 yards offshore of the Sanibel Lighthouse in Lee County. The loggerhead was transferred by Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation to Mote’s Hospital for medical assessment and rehabilitation. Artemis appeared to be exhibiting very mild signs of red tide toxicity, which was treated with subcutaneous fluids daily to help flush out any toxins. Artemis remained in Mote’s Hospital’s staff’s care for over four months due to buoyancy issues so we are super excited the animal was finally cleared for release! On November 9️⃣ both loggerheads were released off of Lido Key after getting tagged and measured. *Mote’s sea turtle activities are conducted under Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Marine Turtle Permits 027, 028, 070, 048, 054, 126, and 216.  #motemarinelab #loggerhead #seaturtles #conservation #rehab #seaturtlehospital #lidobeach #mysarasota #visitflorida

Survivor. This Loggerhead turtle is living proof. Missing part of his shell, this is Larry the Loggerhead turtle and he is carrying a story we’ll never know. Perhaps the large chunk of his shell that is missing was from a shark attack, a boat strike, or something else entirely. Scarred, but still here. A true survivor in the blue. 🎥 Master Reef Guide Steven @i.am.animal 📍 Heron Island #greatbarrierreef #turtle #wildlife

On a journey into the big blue 💙🥹 135 loggerhead turtle hatchlings have been successfully released on the Coffs Coast. In December, we worked alongside @coffscoastwildlifesanctuary to rescue eggs from a nest threatened by the high tide. We carefully extracted the clutch and transferred it to @nswturtlewatch for incubation. Under the watchful eye of #NSWParks and NSW TurtleWatch staff, all hatchlings reached the water and there have been no reports of any returning to shore. It’s a fantastic sign these cuties are well on their way 🐢 A huge thank you to Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary and NSW TurtleWatch for working with us to protect this endangered species. Alongside NSW TurtleWatch we monitor and protect sea turtle nests under the @nsw_marineestate Management Strategy.

Just two little Red-Eared Sliders fluttering claws at each other this morning by the waterfall 🐢🌿 What does it mean when turtles flutter their claws? Fluttering claws are usually associated with courtship, the equivalent of a ‘mating dance’. Male turtles will charm a female turtle by fluttering their claws in front of her face 💚🐢 Or it is a display of territorial behavior between two male turtles. Male turtles will flutter their claws at another male turtle to establish dominance 💪🐢

A sea turtle was struggling with barnacles covering its shell, slowing it down. Thankfully, kind fishermen rescued it and carefully removed the barnacles. With a lighter shell, the turtle swam joyfully back into the ocean 🌊🐢💙 一隻海龜因為背上長滿藤壺而行動緩慢,幸好被善良的漁民發現。

While surveying for sea turtles in St. Joe Bay our researchers happened to come across a loggerhead stuck in a fish aggregating device (FAD). FADS are illegal in marine protected areas such as St. Joe Bay because they often become debris and can cause entanglement of sea life such as sea turtles. After a health assessment, it appeared the turtle had not been stuck for long so we were able to remove the turtle from the device and release it immediately. Please remember to follow your local fishing rules and regulations.
