Flying Squirrels are commonly seen at elevations from 5000 to 8000 feet, but we have seen them as low as 2000 feet. These critters rely on a colony to survive in the wild sharing a communal nest in Winter to stay warm. They are generally solitary creatures most of the year and have a lifespan of 1-4 years. Their territory is about 5 acres and they may glide up to 300 feet, but the common “flight” is about 30 feet as they jump from tree to tree. Flying squirrels use a flap of skin on their sides to glide around the forest. These critters are strictly nocturnal being active a couple hours after sunset and a couple of hours before sunrise. They eat mostly truffles, but also mushrooms, moss, lichens, nuts, seeds, tree buds, insects and meat including baby birds and eggs. Flying squirrels perform an important dispersal function in the forest spreading truffle fungi spores. They inhabit many nest sites which is why TCWC team leader, Teddy Flory, attempts to reunite mom and babies even when a tree nest is cut down. Flying squirrels are food for forest inhabitants like Northern spotted Owls, American Martens, Pacific Fishers and Ringtail. These critters are essential to the health of our forests.
