EXMany practices people consider “Islamic” today were never part of the original teachings of Islam. Over time, culture and local traditions slowly blended into the religion, and this is how many innovations (bid‘ah) appeared.
In different regions, people added customs such as new religious celebrations, rituals around graves, superstitions, or practices believed to bring blessings without any basis in the Qur’an or authentic Sunnah. Many of these started with good intentions, but good intention alone does not make something part of Islam.
The Prophet ﷺ warned about this clearly. He said:
“Whoever introduces into this matter of ours something that is not from it, it will be rejected.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Islam is complete and perfect, but cultures often influence how people practice it. Culture itself is not the problem. The problem begins when cultural traditions start replacing or reshaping the religion.
That is why Muslims must always return to the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah, the way the companions understood them. Sometimes we need to ask ourselves a simple question.
Is this truly from Islam, or is it something culture added later?
Rediscovering the original teachings helps separate faith from tradition and guidance from habit.
