Tall spines aren’t just for Spinosaurus :-) #Ouranosaurus is one of the absolute coolest #hadrosaur #dinosaurs ever discovered. Found in Early #Cretaceous rocks in Niger, this ~23’ long, 4,000+ lb beast was named in 1976 by Taquet from the better part of a skeleton. I have included a number of pics at the end of the video from. He called it an #iguanodontid and wrote, “This slender dinosaur is remarkable notably by the presence on the skull of nasal protuberances and by the extreme elongation of the neural spines on the dorsal vertebrae.” A second skeleton found nearby became the holotype of #Lurdusaurus, “heavy lizard,” which makes sense as in the ‘76 monograph he refers to a gracile (#Ouranosaurus) and stocky (now #Lurdusaurus) morphology that he does not believe is tied to sexual dimorphism. He didn’t name it a new genus in 1976, which surprised me. The paper includes an interesting life restoration that gives it an almost camel-like hump, plus osteograph (bone map), and quarry map. The name, per Taquet, means: “Ourane” – an Arabic name meaning “the valiant,” “the courageous,” or “the daring.” This name is given by the Tuareg of Niger and the Berbers of Algeria to the desert monitor (Varanus griseus). “The Tuareg claim to recognize in this great lizard their maternal uncle, transformed by God as punishment for having killed a she-camel that belonged to Noah.” (Alibert in Méhariste, p. 172) Longest etymology ever! I truly enjoy when an etymology is included, though. Thus, “valiant lizard,” “courageous lizard,“ or even “daring lizard”. Reminds of Torvosaurus, the “wild lizard“ or “savage lizard” as both are suggested in their etymology. I’ll have to keep that trick in mind ;-). Taquet fesses up that he used Ouranosaurus in 1972 for an exhibition, book, and popular articles, a no-no in paleo. He was careful to point out he never properly diagnosed it, thus making the name available. Ouranosaurus has a thumb spike, one reason he linked it to Iguanodon. I am enamored with the tall spines! In the Early Cretaceous period, roughly 112 million years ago in the Elrhaz Formation of Niger, Africa, lived the fascinating Lurdusaurus, an herbivorous iguanodontian dinosaur speculated to have lived a semi-aquatic lifestyle, similar to modern-day hippos. Its name, meaning “heavy lizard”, accurately reflects its bulky build and estimated weight of 2.5-5.5 tonnes. Here’s why Lurdusaurus is considered the Cretaceous equivalent of a hippopotamus: Habitat: Lived in a forested, riverine environment alongside other dinosaurs like Ouranosaurus and Nigersaurus. The presence of abundant fish and crocodile fossils in the rock formations where Lurdusaurus remains were discovered confirms the existence of a freshwater ecosystem dominated by marshes, lakes, and rivers. Body Structure: Its unusual body plan, with a long neck, rotund torso, and short, sturdy limbs, is believed to have been an adaptation for a semi-aquatic life. The robust nature of its limbs suggests it moved slowly on land. Aquatic Adaptations: Paleontologist Thomas R. Holtz Jr. noted its sturdy limbs and huge belly suggest a semi-aquatic mode of life, similar to modern hippos. Its long neck would have allowed it to reach underwater plants or breathe at the surface in deeper waters. Some researchers believe Lurdusaurus, with its heavy bones and potentially thick skin, might have sat low in the water, unable to swim or float, similar to how modern hippos conserve energy. Defense: Lurdusaurus possessed a large thumb spike and a powerful, fortified hand structure that may have functioned as a defensive weapon against predators like the enormous crocodylomorph Sarcosuchus, according to Earth Archives. Diet: While its weak jaw muscles and wide beak suggest a diet of abundant, low-quality vegetation like ferns and horsetails, living in a freshwater environment suggests it likely also fed on aquatic plants. Despite its intriguing characteristics, Lurdusaurus is poorly understood as its nearly complete skeleton has not yet been fully described in a scientific journal.
