Follow @ZOE for all of these delicious and healthy tomato recipes 🍅 It’s nearing the end of tomato season and here are a few good reasons to enjoy them while they’re at their best. Tomatoes are our major source of lycopene, a polyphenol which is really beneficial for our health. Over twenty-five observational studies showed that on average, people with higher intakes of lycopene had 20% reduction in stroke and heart disease and 37% lower mortality (PMID: 28799780). Lycopene can also help to protect your skin from UV damage (although this is not a replacement for suncream). According to one study, eating 40g of tomato paste with 10g of olive oil every day for 10 weeks reduced sunburn risk by 40% (PMID: 11340098). To get the biggest benefit from your tomatoes, and the best flavour, enjoy them with olive oil for better absorption of fat soluble lycopene and don’t be afraid of using tinned tomatoes, these have even more lycopene than fresh. Sun protection still matters sunscreen, hats, shade, and covering the hands and face. I still get Vitamin D, but I protect the areas that age fastest. Building antioxidants from the inside is just as important as what you apply on top.
