NIWell, that went well in the end, thanks to the troubleshooting encyclopedia that is YouTube and this absolutely GOATed magic spray, LPS1. As it turns out, one of the biggest reasons why these old knitting machines run into problems is a build-up of old lubricants that solidify and get congealed over many years of non-usage. And this lubricant is so next-level that I had to order it from an actual aerospace company (big up @lasaeroltd 🙌)!

BAA closer look at the fully fashioned double decreases I used along the neckline of the Henri Sweater.
It’s a simple technique adapted from machine knitting, four stitches decreased to two, but it creates such a clean, distinctive edge.

The @daleofnorway archives got me thinking about why the “industrial” vs. “handmade” divide can sometimes be a bit of a semantic myth. It turns out knitting has been living a double life since the mid-nineteenth century, and it’s time we gave machine knitters a little more love ❤️

NIOver the past few years, I’ve been growing more and more interested in being able to make my own knitwear and although I taught myself how to hand knit a couple of years ago, I was finding the process rather slow and tedious. So last October, I decided to book myself on a Machine Knitting Basics course at @morley_college and started it in January.

All I can say is, I think I set a new record for how long it took a newbie student to buy herself a knitting machine (basically 3 days after the first class). I had a feeling, even back in October, that this would become a new obsession for me and guess what — I was right! 😅

My challenge now is to stop myself from spending a fortune on yarns because the ideas for what I want to make are coming thick and fast! But at least I’ve got one completed project under my belt, which feels like a mini achievement so far 🤗

Shout out to my amazing tutor @jothompsonknits who is a fountain of machine knitting knowledge. And she’s also a “knitter for hire” so if you are in the market for any custom knitwear, she’s your woman! I also had the loveliest bunch of classmates so all in all, it was a completely enjoyable and memorable experience. I highly recommend that you check out what courses your local further education college(s) offer because it is so rewarding learning a new skill, especially one that you’ve had on your bucket list for a while.

HEI repeated this motif 374 times in my newest sweater vest! That’s 6 hours on this one design element! 😅And they say machine knitting is cheating 😅 🤡
I’ve knit this motif by hand and on a machine and the only main difference is that you have to pay more attention on a machine constantly watching your weights and yarn tension. It’s a lot easier to drop stitches knitting this on a machine and come to think of it I’d have given my back a break and experienced far fewer issues knitting it by hand 🥲 Maybe next time!

AMThe transfer tool is a funny thing…there’s not really anything that you hold in this way in daily life, so when you’re learning to machine knit it can feel awkward. (And so some people hold it like a pen…and each to their own, if you find that easier go for it).
But here’s why I teach to hold it this way (the way it was designed to be held). Holding it in the palm of your hand allows your wrist to do all the movement, pulling backwards and forwards and the slight flick of the wrist to transfer are much easier and smaller movements. Holding like a pen, means you have to move your whole arm and body at a more difficult angle to get the stitch off, and when you’re learning, means much higher risk of dropping stitches.
So even though it feels awkward at first (as does learning anything new), it’s worth persevering so you’re not contorting your body to move stitches around the place.
This is the sort of thing you can expect to learn on my online machine knitting courses- not just the techniques but all the little tips and tricks from machine knitting for 18 years. The link for all the courses I offer is in my bio.
I guess my teaching also links a little into the prompt TRADITION for @seam_collective #septtextilelove I think it is so important as crafts people to keep the traditions of our craft alive, by passing on all the basics and fundamental techniques. But then also inspiring people to bring something new to them, to experiment and play, to mix traditional crafts with modern thinking. That’s how we keep it alive! I like to think that the way I work & teach honours both of these things and keeps the tradition of machine knitting going and safe for the future.
