Rami Malek is an Academy Award–winning actor who became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable performers after his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody. Born on May 12, 1981 in Los Angeles to Egyptian immigrant parents, Malek studied theater at the University of Evansville before gradually building his career with supporting roles in films and television.
Before his Oscar win, Malek gained major recognition for playing Elliot Alderson in the USA Network series Mr. Robot (2015–2019). His intense performance as a cybersecurity engineer struggling with mental health and hacking culture earned him a Primetime Emmy Award in 2016 and helped turn the show into a critically acclaimed hit.
His role as Freddie Mercury brought worldwide fame. Malek spent months studying Mercury’s stage presence, voice, and mannerisms, even working with movement coaches and using specially designed prosthetic teeth to recreate the singer’s look. The performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2019, making him the first actor of Egyptian heritage to win the category.
Since then, Malek has continued taking on diverse roles, including playing the mysterious villain Safin in the James Bond film No Time to Die (2021).
