TADo you know the story of Masada? It’s mind blowing.
This UNESCO heritage site was once an ancient fortress built by King Herod, but became a symbol of courage and resilience for Jews. When the Romans invaded Israel 2000 years ago and destroyed Jerusalem, Masada was the last place of resistance by the Jews - almost a 1000 (among them lots of women and children) took refuge and held the fortress for two years against 15.000 Roman soldiers. It’s crazy when you visit Masada , to see the massive ramp of stone and sand that it took the Romans two years to built trying to take Masada. They went to the greatest lengths to eliminate the last free Jews. When they finally reached the fortress, almost a thousand Jewish families had taken their own lives. They decided it was better to die in freedom, than to live in slavery. Of course this story is super tragic. But more so, it’s such a powerful message because it is the Roman empire that crumbled into dust - NOT the Jewish people. How special is it that today, 2000 years later, the flag of Israel again waves proudly on top of Masada! I always get a bit emotional visiting Masada, such a unique place to visit in Israel 🇮🇱
You can visit Masada from the Eastern entrance (on road 90) via cable cart or the snake path (this is a hard climb) or from the Western entrance, which is a camp site and from where you can walk up the Roman ramp (amazing for sunrise!)
