To temporarily reduce global temperatures by reflecting some of the sunlight back into space. How? Through stratospheric aerosol injection: aircraft release reflective particles (such as sulfur) into the stratosphere to shield some of the sun’s rays. A direct intervention on the planet’s thermostat. Gates has funded programs such as the Harvard Solar Geoengineering Research Program, which studies the feasibility, risks, and impacts of these technologies. For some, it is an extreme measure. For others, it is a possible “emergency solution” if the climate reaches points of no return. Supporters describe it as: – relatively inexpensive – technically feasible – potentially effective in reducing heat waves and extreme weather damage Critics call it: – unpredictable – risky for atmospheric balance – a distraction from the real priority: reducing emissions Gates himself has always emphasized that it should not replace greenhouse gas cuts, but at most complement them as a temporary measure.
