Avete presente quando, durante le proteste, in alcuni Stati Internet viene spento deliberatamente. In quei casi non sparisce solo la rete. Sparisce la possibilità di coordinarsi, di raccontare cosa sta succedendo, di restare in contatto. Seguitemi fino alla fine perché vi voglio parlare di una rivoluzione che cambia tutto e che permetterà di inviare e ricevere messaggi in tutto il mondo, dal nostro telefono, senza bisogno di Internet.
Anche se vi sembra una cosa tecnica, statemi a sentire perché prima di tutto questa è una questione sociale e culturale. Un po’ come all’inizio di Internet. All’epoca, quando lo spiegavo, parlavo di computer collegati tra loro e pensavano parlassi di qualcosa di tecnico e basta. Oggi sappiamo che Internet è stata prima di tutto una rivoluzione sociale.
La rivoluzione si chiama Meshtastic e MeshCore. Sono sistemi open source, senza un proprietario centrale, che permettono di comunicare via messaggio tra persone o dispositivi senza bisogno di Internet. Ogni dispositivo che entra nella rete diventa un nodo. Ogni nodo trasmette via radio per centinaia di metri, spesso anche per chilometri in linea d’aria.
Per creare un nodo basta un piccolo dispositivo a basso costo. Per ora sono ancora cose da smanettoni, come lo era Internet per noi all’inizio, ma a voi non interessa quanti smanettamenti dobbiamo fare per fare in modo che questi piccoli dispositivi che trasmettono via radio diventino un nodo della rete Meshtastic. Una volta creato un nodo si diventa parte della catena.
Si tratta di una rivoluzione che si basa sull’accessibilità, perché i dispositivi su cui installare Meshtastic o MeshCore costano anche solo 10 dollari. Questo è il motivo per cui una rete del genere può diventare diffusa. Non serve un’infrastruttura, non serve un operatore, non serve un investimento enorme. Serve solo che qualcuno accenda un nodo.

H4Testing off-grid communication using #Meshtastic on 868 MHz.
I’m running two devices: one is the @clockworkpi #uConsole paired with the #HackerGadgets expansion board, which adds #LoRa (SX1262), #GPS, RTC, RTL-SDR, and USB hub functionality.
The second device is the #Tanmatsu terminal from #NicolaiElectronics, powered by an ESP32-C6 with native LoRa support.
Both devices are configured to communicate over Meshtastic in a peer-to-peer mesh, with no internet or infrastructure required.
It’s a compact and portable setup for #offgrid messaging, location sharing, and mesh experiments.

COBig Shoutout to Kenny at @appalachiastan_tech for showing me this tool. I’ll be following this up with another video on how he used to to map out his Mesh post-Helene to assist in recovery there.
Kenny also makes a damn good mesh node you can check out in the product link on the video.
Mesh Planner is open source, so you can contribute to it if you are willing and able.
I would love to see some of these features added in the future:
1. Ability to model multiple nodes at once (and confirm they can hit each other)
2. The ability to load the node map from the Meshtastic App into this so you can estimate your coverage (with controls to filter out old/offline nodes)
3. the ability to auto-populate the map with a given number of nodes to have the software tell you where to put repeaters. (“give me good coverage for [this area, or to link these two points], tell me where to put [this many] nodes”)

O Meshtastic opera como uma rede mesh de código aberto, sem estrutura centralizada. As mensagens são criptografadas e podem atravessar distâncias de até 300 quilômetros, saltando de um dispositivo a outro. O projeto é colaborativo e aberto à participação da comunidade.
Ao contrário dos smartphones, que dependem de infraestrutura como torres de celular ou redes Wi-Fi, os aparelhos Meshtastic se comunicam diretamente entre si. O usuário conecta o dispositivo ao celular via Bluetooth, mas quem envia a mensagem é o rádio. A conexão é de baixa largura de banda, suficiente apenas para mensagens curtas.
Uma das características principais é a capacidade de roteamento. A mensagem não precisa alcançar o destino final em um único salto — ela pode ser repassada por diversos dispositivos até chegar. Isso aumenta a robustez da rede à medida que mais aparelhos entram nela.
O uso ainda é limitado, mas já existem redes ativas em algumas regiões urbanas. A proposta atende a situações em que as redes convencionais falham, como durante desastres naturais ou em locais sem cobertura, como trilhas remotas. Não se trata de um substituto para o celular, mas de uma solução alternativa para quando ele deixa de funcionar.
