Your genes aren’t your destiny but they do need some maintenance. Think of your genes like a kitchen after a big meal. Before you can make anything new, you’ve got to clean up first. That’s the Soak and Scrub method from my book Dirty Genes. THE SOAK Stop adding to the mess. This means hitting pause on processed foods, reducing exposure to everyday chemicals (cleaners, fragrances, plastics), and giving your body a break from the constant input. You can’t clean a pan while you’re still pouring grease on it. THE SCRUB Once you’ve stopped the onslaught, NOW you add nutrients back in to support healthy gene and enzyme function. This is where targeted nutrition actually works—because your body can finally use it. Most people skip straight to the scrub and wonder why supplements aren’t working. 😭 We’ve lost another great 😭 Jason’s has been our go to for such a long time now because of their few ingredients and great tasting sourdough that I feel completely happy giving it to my children. Until now… Why? Because the UK has brought in a law that states that all white flour has to be fortified with calcium, iron, niacin, thiamin and folic acid. And so Jason’s had to comply. What’s the issue? The issue is that folic acid has been shown to affect the methylation processes in people who have a variation of the MTHFR gene…which is 60% of the population. This leads to slow detoxification, slower DNA repair and slow cellular healing. It can also really affect hormone metabolism - it is regularly seen that those with hormonal issues have at least 1 of the 2 variants. So by eating folic acid, we are slowing down so many of the key bodily processes in 60% of the populations’ bodies. This isn’t ok. So what can you do if you know or suspect you have the MTHFR gene variation? Simply eat bread without folic acid in it. For now, that’s bread from bakeries and small mills, as well as wholemeal clean ingredients breads. Homocysteine is driven by one thing - a sluggish methylation cycle. SO the fix starts with the four nutrients that run it: active folate, B12, B6, choline, and riboflavin. Food first ☝️ dark leafy greens daily, eggs, legumes, salmon, sardines, liver if you can stomach it. BUT food alone often isn’t enough, so supplementation matters too. Active folate as methylfolate, B12 as methylcobalamin, B6 as P5P, and riboflavin - at therapeutic doses, not the token amounts in most prenatals. These are the exact foundations I work through with every client before we build their stack.
