As Fergie said, big girls don’t cry - unless it’s for science! 🔬 “You can see as my tear dries up, a beautiful frozen landscape is created ❄️ remember how salty tears are? When water evaporates, salt crystals are formed! Not only do we shed tears when experiencing emotions, but tears are also released every time we blink. While emotional tears indicate distress between individuals from certain animal species, they serve additional functions beyond emotional expression! Tears consist mainly of water, providing hydration to the eye, aiding in clear vision by focusing light, and facilitating the dispersion of electrolytes, proteins, lipids, and mucins. Electrolytes, such as sodium, chloride, calcium, and potassium are important for maintaining pH stability and normal osmotic pressure (they also create beautiful crystalline patterns on the microscope slide when water evaporates). Lots of different proteins are present: some are antimicrobial, some are enzymes that help breakdown lipids and other proteins and some are involved in wound healing and inflammation regulation. Lipids can also be found in tears! Can you see some small oily droplets floating around? These lipids include cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids, and they prevent water from evaporating too quickly.” 📸: @tardibabe 🔬: Olympus BX53 . . . #EvidentLifeScience #Evident #Olympus #Microscopy #Microscope #Micro #Microscopic #MicroscopicWorld #LifeScience #Biology #Microscopes #Nature #Science #Scientists #MicroscopeImages #Research #Optics #Imaging #Objective #Sciart #MicroWorld

We think its time to start charging face mites rent 👀 "Did you know that less than 10% of the cells from our bodies are actually our own? Not only do we shelter billions of bacteria and yeasts but also tiny mites… Yes yes! You read well, there are microscopic animals crawling on your skin, especially on your face. 😂 After 8 hours of sampling mine, I finally found this cutie in my left eyebrow! It kinda looks like a water bear with a beaver tail, don’t you think? There are two species of Demodex found on humans: Demodex folliculorum, which lives in hair follicules, and Demodex brevis, which prefers the comfort of sebaceous glands. Demodex, also called face mites, eyelash mites or skin mites, usually measure from 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm in length, making them invisible to the naked eye. Like most monsters, they wait until nightfall to get out of their caves (AKA yo face) to crawl, copulate and munch on skin cells, oils and hormones. SURPRISE THOUGH, face mites don’t possess an anus, so when their life cycle is over and they die, after two weeks of existence, everything gets back on your face! Wee! I can hear you scream from afar: ‘’But tardi, are face mites dangerous???’’. The answer’s no! Well, in most cases… You see, if your immune system is working normally then you should already feel safer. It really is when the density of mites on your face is too high that they can cause problems. That being said, there are safe treatment options!" 📸: @tardibabe 🔬: Olympus BX53 #evidentlifescience #evident #olympus #microscopy #microscope #micro #microscopic #microscopicworld #lifescience #biology #microscopes #nature #science #scientists #microscopeimages #research #optics #imaging #objective #sciart #microworld

This is a digital reconstruction—regular microscopes can’t capture details this small. At this scale, light fails, and only electron microscopes can reveal what’s here. Brain surgery demands millimeter-level precision. Neurosurgeons operate around areas that control speech, movement, memory, and personality — often using advanced imaging, microscopes, and real-time navigation to avoid healthy tissue. In this field, precision isn’t a skill. Watch the mitosis of a fruit fly embryo 🪰🔬 The 2024 Nikon Small World in Motion video winners are here. As always, all the winning microscopy videos are remarkable. Now in its 14th year, this international video competition selects the best of hundreds of entries, each providing a different look into the microscopic world. Dr. Bruno Vellutini's winning video captures the rhythmic waves of division and tissue movements critical to proper embryonic formation in fruit flies. he video reveals the dynamic processes of fly embryogenesis, crucial for uncovering genetic pathways that mirror those in humans and other mammals, with applications for cancer research, birth defects, and potential treatment development. Tap the link in bio to learn more 📹️ @nikoninstruments #nikonsmallworld #nikonsmallworldinmotion #microscopes #mitosis #fruitfly #photomicography

Refraction Vanishing Act: the liquid (immersion oil) in this glass tube has the same index of refraction as the glass. When the oil covers the glass rod inside the tube, the rod becomes invisible! Immersion oil is used with high resolution microscopes and designed to have the same index of refraction as the glass slide and objective lens. This physics puzzle demonstration was handcrafted by a glass maker in Germany and is sold by experimentis, the online shop for physics. ➡️ Follow the link in my profile for info on where to get this and many other amazing items featured here on @physicsfun #physicstoy #physics #physicsfun #optics #indexofrefraction #immersionoil #microscope #microscopy #invisibility #refraction #glassart #science #scienceisawesome

Micropores aren’t just tiny holes — they’re precision tools in biological research. Tissue samples are first stabilized using resins or freezing techniques to prevent tearing. The micropore blade moves with extreme control, slicing layers just a few microns thick. Each slice is uniform, preserving delicate cellular structures for observation under microscopes. Why it matters: • Enables high-resolution imaging • Preserves tissue integrity • Supports research in histology, pathology, and neuroscience Physics, material science, and engineering converge here: • Smooth motion reduces shear stress • Sharp edges minimize deformation • Controlled force ensures repeatable results ✨ At this scale, tiny movements matter, and microscopic precision becomes a window into life itself. #Microscopy #ScienceInAction #BiomedicalEngineering #EverydayScience #DidYouKnow

More than meets the eye 🔬 With advanced scanning electron microscopes, Los Alamos scientists can explore a hidden world invisible at first glance. Of course, microscopy isn’t just for pretty pictures: it’s used to study the structure of metals, semiconductors and more to reveal how they behave in varied conditions.
