❓Do you have a growth mindset? 🙋🏼‍♀️ The research conducted by Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck looked into the profound impact that certain beliefs can have on our lives. More specifically, she noticed that those who believe their personality, intelligence and creative abilities to be fixed from birth and unchanging (fixed mindset) were more likely to give up in the face of setbacks, ignore useful feedback, feel threatened by the success of others and avoid challenges that could lead to failure. Dweck found that those who set themselves up with a growth mindset (seeing failure not as a sign of permanent lack of ability but a chance for learning and growth) were more likely to persist after a setback, embrace big challenges, learn from criticism and find inspiration in others. I often revisit this research as I find it so helpful in my own life to set myself up with a growth mindset when I tackle big things or face setbacks. Definitely check out Dweck’s work! The most powerful skill to learn for our emotional health is being able to challenge your unhealthy thoughts. Not everything you think is true. Many of our thoughts are just stories our mind creates based on how we are feeling in that moment. It’s crucial to try to challenge and change those stories. Here’s a quick, practical way to do it: The moment you notice a thought like, “I’m never going to be good at this,” stop and recognize it. Don’t judge it, just notice it. Question It: Ask yourself, “Is this 100% true?” or “What’s the proof for and against this thought?” Often, you’ll realize it’s based on a feeling (like doubt or fear) instead of facts. Reframe It: Replace it with a more balanced, helpful thought. Speak to yourself as if you are speaking to a friend going through a similar experience Our thoughts directly affect how we feel and what we do next. If you tell yourself, “I’m not good enough,” you’ll probably feel discouraged and avoid trying. But if you shift that thought to, “I’m learning and improving with each try,” you’re more likely to keep going. This is a skill we teach in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT teaches us that we don’t have to believe everything our mind says. We can question it, challenge it, and choose thoughts that support our growth instead of holding us back. This shift won’t happen overnight, but every time you do it, you’re training your brain to be more balanced, kind, and resilient. Take care of your mind and body. Shifting our mindset involves challenging negative or unhelpful thoughts (cognitive distortions) and replacing them with more balanced and constructive thoughts. This process helps individuals reinterpret situations more rationally, reducing stress and negative emotional responses. Because our thoughts influence how we feel and ultimately act, mindset shifts can help us regulate our emotions and get out of a state of paralysis. In cognitive behavioural therapy, we often use the ABC model (Activating event, Beliefs, Consequences) to illustrate how our beliefs about an event influence our emotional and behavioral responses. These mindset shifts target the ‘B’ (Beliefs) part of the model, encouraging more adaptive and constructive beliefs about oneself, situations, or the world, which in turn affect emotional and behavioral outcomes. In addition, cognitive reframing fosters a sense of self-efficacy by encouraging us to perceive challenges as opportunities for growth.
