Most high school students who want to study aerospace engineering hear the same advice: “Get good grades.” “Study math and physics.” That advice is correct… but it’s not enough if you want to get into universities like Stanford, MIT, or Berkeley. What admissions officers really look for are projects. Not because they expect you to build the next SpaceX rocket in high school. They don’t. They want to see agency. Can you identify a problem and try to solve it? Maybe you build a wildfire monitoring drone because your region struggles with fires. Maybe you design a simple drone kit to help younger students learn engineering. The project itself doesn’t have to change the world. What matters is that you started, you struggled, and you kept going. Universities are much more willing to invest in students who have already proven they have the drive to solve problems. Because once they give you better tools, mentors, and education… you can go solve much bigger ones. If you want to be an aerospace engineer: Build things. Break things. Learn by doing.
