Cover a book with me while I answer one of my most frequently asked questions: “Why do librarians have master’s degrees?” The things you see me do as content are not what I’m doing during the school day as my main responsibilities. Also, while the general baseline requirement is the MlS/MLIS for most librarian positions in the US, of course there will be instances where that is not a requirement. I am speaking from my experience and my state requirements. Some library positions require two master’s degrees or a JD/MLIS or an MD/MLIS. Two years ago, I earned my Masters in Library and Information Science, and one of my absolute FAVORITE parts of librarianship is getting to know someone’s interests and what they’re in the mood for well enough to find the PERFECT book recommendation! Still, sometimes I do go just a bit overboard—friends and family have definitely given me the “can you slow down, I’m not even through the first book you told me to read” line 😂 One of my go-to recommendations for people who like fantasy and mythology but also want a read that really emphasises beautiful writing and depth of character is Circe by Madeline Miller (and of course, Song of Achilles as well!) I love a good retelling, and I feel like these are so fun to recommend because they work for many different types of readers! Do you have one go-to book recommendation?
