THModest Mouse is an American rock based out of Portland, Oregon who’s sound emerged during the earlier days of indie and alternative rock in the mid 1990s. Known for their punky style, the band gained notoriety through much of their earlier albums such as “The Lonesome Crowded West” and “The Moon & Antarctica”
In 2004, the band released “Good News For People Who Love Bad News”. The album highlighted much of frontman Isaac Brock’s tumultuous times in recent years, suffering the loss of “a couple of the most important people in [his] life.” The album showcases highs and lows, and Brock’s lyrics take on an existential edge throughout.
The album is not without its quirks though. The albums production style felt very put together and personal, even retaining a few off-script moments, like Brock announcing “I f***ed up the last line” at the end of Bukowski.
All in all, an incredible album that feels playful yet somewhat detached from their first few albums. It stands alone as one of my favorites of the band, and a pivotal moment in my discovery of music.
