I ran a little experiment: I went live on TikTok for 3 days in a row — and here are the results. I received a few warnings saying my content wasn’t engaging enough, there wasn’t much sound, and not much was happening on screen (silent art life, you know 😅). But there were positives too: I gained some new followers, and TikTok started showing my streams more often to my existing audience. And the best part — I filmed a lot of content that I can now edit and reuse. So even imperfect live streams are still worth it. The Daffodil is the is the dual national emblem of Wales alongside the Leek and the birth flower for March and the focus for my newsletter this month alongside the Dove, it comes with a booklet full of illustrations, poetry, folklore and a digital daffodil print to download. Printing with beautiful daffodils, in Cornwall they have been in flower since December this year in commercial production but in my garden the are just coming into flower, this one was dying back so I wanted to immortalise it. The Latin name for Daffodil, Narcissus, associated with the Greek myth of ill-fated Narcissus who fell hopelessly in love with his own reflection. They are often seen as a portent of spring and as a representation of rebirth, new beginnings, inner reflection and vitality. They are also thought to represent inspiration, forgiveness, and creativity. In China, if a daffodil blooms on the first day of a new year, it is thought to bring wealth and good fortune for the rest of the year. The gift of a single daffodil is thought to bring about misfortune, so it’s better to give a bunch. It is traditionally given to celebrate a 10th wedding anniversary. Yesterday afternoon I had a lovely creative session making monoprints for Saturday’s Vintage Market at my shop! I gotta admit, I’m still at the stage where about 50% turn out as inky blobs 🙃 but getting messy and experimenting with techniques and flowers has been the best part! I wanted to share a few DIY tips I’ve learned in case you want to try it yourself: 🪻If you’re just getting started, I put together a list of the exact supplies I used. Just comment MONOPRINT and I’ll send it to your inbox. 🪻I’ve tried both pressed and freshly picked flowers. Both can work well, but I prefer using pressed flowers. They’re more delicate, but since they’re already flat, they give a cleaner, more accurate print. 🪻A gel plate (also called a jelly pad) is super helpful for inking up both sides of your flowers. That way, you can print the top and the bottom in one press and get two prints at once! 🪻I like using both a brayer and a paintbrush when applying ink. Pressed flowers can be fragile, and the brayer sometimes pulls off leaves. For more delicate flowers, I find a paintbrush works better. 🪻Look for interesting silhouettes in the plants you use. Wildflowers and even weeds are great for this. They’re sturdy, they take ink well, and their shapes can be so beautiful. 🪻 Try framing your prints in a way that feels personal. I designed a sweet scalloped mat inspired by a vintage one I fell in love with while thrifting and use it to frame all my monoprint art! Have fun with it! #monoprint #pressedflowers #art

I’ve created 100 prompts for #100daysoftextiletechniques, covering a wide range of practical processes, creative experimentation, and skill-building ideas perfect for secondary school textiles. My plan? ➡️Complete one prompt every day before I leave work/the studio (weekends) ➡️ Build a collection of finished sample books ➡️Create high-quality textile technique resources to inspire my students I'm hoping this will be about consistent creativity, professional development for technology/ art and design teachers, and building a bank of practical textile samples that students can see, touch, and learn from. Throwback Thursday - I’m not even sure if this is still a ‘thing’ on here, but my phone threw this up as a memory and, as I’ve been trying to hit gallery deadlines rather than film reels, it felt like too good an opportunity to miss. - It’s odd looking back (I think this was about four years ago) at how the way I make reels has changed slightly over time, but I hope it still gives you some idea of how these monotypes are produced. - For the technique-minded amongst you, this is a monotype using @dalerrowney1783 oil paint and @st.cuthberts.mill Somerset paper, which is dampened before use. I use a plastic drypoint plate as a matrix, but aluminium or copper plates are often used too. - #EmersonMayes #Printmaking #Monotype #Monoprint #BirdArt
