Helicopters are being used to drop water on the Carroll County fire. Fire Weather Warnings continue today. Fire crews are actively working a large wildfire in the area between Nebo Road, County Road 144, and County Road 163. According to Chris Burnham with the Mississippi Forestry Commission, an aerial survey estimates the fire at approximately 3,000 acres with 40% containment. At this time, about 10 non-residential structures and five homes are threatened. Fire lanes have already been established around several structures, and additional lines are being constructed to protect homes farther out. Crews are actively focused on structure protection. A helicopter is currently making water bucket drops to help cool the head of the fire. The operational goal is to keep the fire west of County Road 144 and east of Nebo Road. The wind is out of the northeast, which continues to influence fire behavior. The Mississippi Forestry Commission has five dozers and approximately 20 personnel on the scene, working alongside Carroll Fire Services, the U.S. Forest Service, MEMA, and the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Containment efforts are being significantly complicated by terrain and debris. The fire is burning through areas impacted by both the recent ice storm and older damage from the Rolling Fork tornado. That tornado path remains visible on satellite imagery. In addition, the area includes deep gullies, some reaching up to 100 feet, making access and line construction difficult. Crews remain on scene working to contain the fire and protect nearby homes.
