A Supermarket floating on water? 🌊 🛸 No, it’s not sci-fi, it’s plastic pollution! ㅤ A recent Brand Audit conducted by BFFP member @city_to_ocean found branded plastic waste from supermarket chains like Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl and Delhaize floating on the canals in Brussels (Belgium). ㅤ Together with FMCG giants like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, supermarkets are major drivers of single-use plastic. ㅤ ✨ Supermarkets have real power to tackle plastic pollution through Deposit Return Schemes (DRS), reuse systems, bulk options, and more. ❌Comment BPA for list of retailers and supermarkets who have stopped using thermal receipts 🎉 Did you know individual thermal receipts can contain BPA that is 250 to 1,000x greater than the amount in a can of food! and a single receipt can leach more than a plastic bottle would over years! BIsphenol A, of BPA is an industrial chemical used to make certain plastics and resins, including food containers, baby bottles, water bottles and hygiene products. BPA is a know endocrine disruptor as it mimics the levels of oestrogen receptors alpha and beta, leading to changes in cell proliferation, cell death, (apoptosis) or migration, thereby contributing to cancer development and progression (PMC:4602822) BPA rubs off easily from thermal receipts and is absorbed by the body. BPA free receipts are no better as they contain BPS which has similar effects on health and is considered a ‘reproductive toxicant’ My advice: 👉Say no to till receipts when you don’t need them 👉Ask for digital receipts instead (if you’re ok giving your info) 👉If you really need a paper receipt, try not to touch it too much, and don’t give receipts to little kids to play with. 👉 If you handle receipts at work and have to do so, make sure you wear gloves! Your health is worth it 👏 To tell if your receipt is printed in thermal paper vs laser ink, you can scratch with your fingernail. Since the thermal paper has a chemical coating on the surface, it generates heat when you scratch the paper. As a result of the heat, the paper will produce black marks. When a PLA or cornstarch bag from manufacturers like @biobag or sustainable bag innovators like @baggu and @ecoright ends up in a standard municipal landfill, it doesn't magically turn into soil. Deprived of sunlight and oxygen, it gets buried alive. For those of us tracking the clean energy transition, this is an infrastructure nightmare. Instead of composting, the bag undergoes anaerobic digestion and pumps out Methane—a greenhouse gas 80x more potent than CO2. While agencies like the @epagov and the Global Methane Hub spend billions trying to capture these fugitive landfill emissions, we are accidentally manufacturing more of it in our kitchens. Furthermore, it wastes the massive "embodied energy" (the grid power used to manufacture and ship the bag) just to create a toxic gas leak.
