Meet the striped mud turtle (Kinosternon baurii)—one of Florida’s smallest turtles. Hatchlings are about 1” long with a tiny keel on the shell; adults stay small at 3–4” and often show three faint stripes. They thrive in cypress swamps and blackwater creeks and are surprisingly terrestrial after rains, foraging on insects, snails, and algae. In Florida they’re active year-round, and females often nest fall→spring. #Turtle #MudTurtle #Hatchling #BigCypress #BigCypressNationalPreserve #Everglades #FloridaWildlife #Wetlands #Herping #FieldHerping #TurtlesOfInstagram #ReptilesOfInstagram #florida #NatureEducation #Conservation

The Amazon Mud Turtle (Kinosternon scorpioides) is a widespread but rarely encountered species of turtle across much of the Neotropics. After over six years of working here in Madre de Dios, I finally encountered one of these adorable turtles as it was crossing a trail. These turtles rarely leave wet areas, and when they do it’s normally only to find new areas with water where they can stay submerged. Definitely one of the coolest species of reptile I’ve seen so far this year!

The Striped Mud turtle (Kinosternon baurii) is endemic to the coastal plain of the eastern United States, but peninsular Florida is truly the heart of their range. They thrive in a multitude of habitats, particularly lentic and ephemeral wetlands. His head was quite impressive, and his unusually clear pond was full of Asiatic Clams (Corbicula fluminea). The next Striped Mud turtle we captured excreted crushed shells onto my hand. In riverine habitats, K. baurii is often outcompeted by Loggerhead and Common musk turtles (Sternotherus minor and odoratus respectively), but occasionally dense "pockets" of them can be found. As a side note, I have never found or heard of a population of Eastern Mud turtles (Kinosternon subrubrum) in a truly lotic system; they seem to strongly prefer lentic habitats and ephemeral wetlands. Striped mud turtles exhibit considerable morphological variation across their range, with those north of Florida averaging larger with faint or absent stripes. Even within peninsular Florida, there's considerable variation. The male shown here is a textbook specimen, although a "dark" phenotype exists in the heart of the Gulf hammock. In the Everglades, individuals of certain populations are extremely light in color, with an almost translucent appearance. However those in the keys tend to lack stripes, and more closely resemble the northern form than any from peninsular Florida. #kinosternidae #mudturtle #stripedmudturtle #kinosternon #kinosternonbaurii #turtle #florida

A Narrow-Bridged Musk Turtle (Claudius angustatus) from a recent trip to Belize. The locality this turtle was found at represents a >80 km range extension for the species. There’s no reason to believe they don’t extend even further outside of their known range, as there are no geographic features near this location that could pose a boundary to dispersal. Where they are better understood this species inhabits ephemeral wetlands. They can reach high abundances in certain locations, but are at the mercy of landowners. If someone decides to destroy a piece of land with Narrow Bridged Musk Turtles present, they quickly become extirpated. When ponds dry up, this species either moves to perennial ponds or digs into dirt and aestivates until rains bring back water. There is a sizable quantity of data on this species, but much of it remains unpublished. Adults and juveniles feed on invertebrates/invertebrate larvae. It’s also likely they feed heavily on amphibians and their larvae. The presence of a tricuspid upper jaw, and aggressively hooked lower jaw indicate an active predatory role for these turtles. The generic latin name “Claudius” is likely in reference to the clumsy posture these turtles assume when on land. They are the only mud/musk turtle (Kinosternid) to lack a movable hinge on the plastron and have a much reduced kinetic carapace-plastron articulation. The plastron has only eight scutes, instead of the typical 11 seen in most turtles. Furthermore, the scute layout is not intuitive. The gular scute is the first scute and is paired on each side, instead of being a single small scute at the anterior end of the plastron. Supposedly some caves in Belize are crawling with Narrow Bridged Musk Turtles. These areas were likely poached and the source of many captive turtles. At this location the Narrow-Bridged Musk Turtles seem to move frequently between ponds, and where there is one, there are usually more. We hand captured 21 turtles in a pond formerly inhabited by Claudius, but found no Claudius. Compared to the cosmopolitan jungle inhabiting White-Lipped and Tabasco Mud Turtles, it will take more time to understand how these turtles are distributed.

Did you know something this small could be this impressive? 🐢✨ 1. Small but mighty 🐢 Striped mud turtles are tiny (often under 5 inches) but built tough with a hinged shell that helps protect them from predators. 2. Not your average swimmer 💦 These turtles can stay underwater for surprisingly long periods by absorbing small amounts of oxygen through specialized tissues. 3. Eau de turtle 😅 When threatened, striped mud turtles can release a strong musky scent — their built-in “leave me alone” defense system.
