Day 9! This one is taking it back to the roots a little bit. We have the Multiplexer (MUX) circuit. This will allow us to select data when needed. A simple example of where Multiplexers are used are WiFi routers. When selecting where data should route to. If you have 5 people on the WiFi and data is coming in, it needs to go to that specific device. Thats where the Multiplexer logic is used.

Been soldering a couple of Multiplexers, and testing UsbMIDI devices with VCVRack. Microcontrollers has limited input / output connections, a multiplexer allows to connect a lot more devices to a single microcontroller, leaving the rest of I/O available for other tasks. Neopixel knobs wiring is complete. I used 2 16-channel multiplexers sharing address pins, with the outputs going into 2 ADC channels. Next, I need to solder the DAC and op amp output, and the electronics will be pretty much complete. Don’t Use Arduino Without Knowing These! 1. Power Supply Basics Know how to power your board safely (Vin, 5V, USB). Avoid connecting 12V directly to 5V pin! 2. Input/Output Limits Max current per I/O pin: 40mA (recommended: 20mA). Don’t directly power motors or relays from digital pins. 3. Pin Conflicts Don’t use RX/TX (0 & 1) for sensors when using Serial Monitor. Know which pins have special functions (e.g., PWM, interrupts). 4. Pull-Up/Pull-Down Resistors Use INPUT_PULLUP to read switches correctly. Avoid floating input pins—they can give random results. 5. Use External Power for High-Load Devices Always use external power (via relay/transistor) for motors, servos, etc. Use a diode with inductive loads to prevent damage. 6. Understand Delay vs millis() Don’t block your code using delay() for long durations. Learn millis() for better timing without freezing the program. 7. Never Upload Code with Power-Hungry Modules Connected Disconnect modules like WiFi, GSM, or motors when uploading. It prevents brownouts or failed uploads. 8. Save I/O Pins with Multiplexing Learn shift registers, analog multiplexers, or I2C expanders to increase inputs/outputs. 9. Serial Debugging is Powerful Use Serial.print() to debug code efficiently. Know baud rate mismatches can cause garbage output. 10. Always Check Component Ratings Don’t fry sensors—check voltage and current ratings. a little demonstration of how the digital side of this Moog Voyager communicates with the analog side. the yellow line is a sequence of CVs (control voltages) output by the CPU and DAC around 700 times a second. these are fed to a series of multiplexers that distribute it to all of the analog circuitry that takes CV control. each 'step' in the yellow line represents a different knob on the front of the synth! the blue line is a series of 8 'enable' pulses, unique to each multiplexer (think of them as 8 way switches - this synth has many). when the pulse arrives at this particular multiplexer , alongside a 3 bit address (not shown), the multiplexer knows to dispatch the concurrent CV to its correct location. in this case, the filter cutoff and resonance.
