In 1927, Sigmund Freud argued that ‘religion is a system of wishful illusions.’ It’s a coping mechanism to deal with a world that offers us insecurity, danger, and death. Because we can all feel vulnerable and insignificant from time to time. And so, to reclaim a sense of control over ourselves and the world, we have invented religion. Freud argued that we are terrified of nature, both the forces of nature like hurricanes and floods, but also death. Both our own death and others. And so we have invented a father figure in the sky who can look after us and look out for us, because the father represents security, comfort, and protection. For Freud, if a religion is to work, it has to do three things. First, it has to ‘exorcise the terrors of nature’ and to make the world just a little bit less scary. It has to give meaning to the chaos. Second, it has to offer us a kind of mental resolve, a resilience, a staying power. You can do this because God is on your side. And third, it has to offer you a consolation, a prize, an afterlife, a heaven. If you endure this, you will get that. Interestingly, Freud didn’t say that any of this makes religion true or false. God could yet exist. Freud was saying why religion is so appealing. It is a way of coping with the world. It’s a psychological crutch. We use religion to make living a bit easier.

In 1990, Robert Bly said something we still aren’t ready to hear: ✨Follow @risehealthrive to step into your true divine power and be part of the change the world needs right now. The Industrial Revolution didn’t just change how men worked. It changed how fathers passed down masculinity to their sons. For most of human history, a boy learned what it meant to be a man by standing close to his father. Working beside him, watching him, absorbing him. There was a transmission. A knowing. A felt sense of manhood that Bly called the “male motive feeling.” And that transmission was lost when fathers left the home for 10 hours a day. The proximity ended, the initiation faded, and boys were forced to figure out masculinity on their own. We didn’t just industrialize labor. We industrialized fatherhood. Look around. How many guys feel like something is off but can’t explain why? They learned how to win but never learned how to be. They perform strength but feel weak. They were corrected more than they were initiated. A lot of guys weren’t guided into manhood. This isn’t about blame. It’s about understanding what was interrupted. Masculinity wasn’t meant to be downloaded from the internet. It was meant to be embodied. Every boy deserves to be fathered. #boycrisis #youngmen #masculinity #masculineleadership #mensinnerwork

Be careful around anyone who thinks they are the pure ones. Be careful around anyone who thinks that their tribe, their people, are the righteous ones. Because, as Bertrand Russell once argued, anyone who is willing to divide the world into the righteous and the unrighteous are just a small push away from some terrible brutality. According to Russell, when we divide the world into pure and impure, saints and sinners, we are simply creating an elaborate system of ethics where the herd justifies itself in wreaking punishment upon things it dislikes. When you simply disagree with someone, you probably treat them with respect, and if you have a problem with your neighbour, you usually settle it peacefully. But if somebody labels their neighbour as a monster, or their rivals as subhuman, they usually do so because they want to inflict punishment and pain upon them. They create an outlet for their sadism and mask cruelty, as Justice Russell argues. This is one of the biggest problems with certain kinds of religion, because any religion that divides the world into a chosen, God-loved people, and then those who are the outcast sinners or heathens, does so to allow lynching, crusades, and murder. As Pascal put it, ‘Men never do evil so completely, and cheerfully, it’s when they do it from religious conviction.’ Russell’s point is that we can all disagree without abusing each other. We can have enemies without killing them. When we reduce people to labels, and divide the world into pure and impure, clean and unclean, righteous and unrighteous, we make the world far more brutal, cruel, and dangerous.

Something is deeply wrong when the same brilliant mind that creates also destroys. 💔🌍 Martin Buber witnessed the Holocaust, Stalin, and immense suffering, prompting him to ask: what is broken in the way we relate to each other? His answer was radical yet simple. We are not separate entities that occasionally connect; we ARE relationship at our core. Connection isn't just something we do; it's an intrinsic part of who we are. So, what happens when we forget that? 👁️🤝 #MartinBuber #HumanConnection #IAndThou #Philosophy #Awakening #Empathy #ConsciousLiving #Dialogue
