I recently had someone ask if they could use their DMC floss stash for needlepoint and you absolutely can! For those unfamiliar with DMC floss, it’s commonly used for cross-stitch and embroidery, but it’s a needlepoint friendly thread as well! DMC floss can be a dividing subject in the needlepoint community. Some people love it, some hate it. Personally, I am team DMC floss all the way. Here are the pros: -It’s affordable at 70ish cents a skein -It’s easily accessible for those who don’t have a nearby LNS. You can find it at most Michael’s and big box craft stores. -It stitches beautifully! In my opinion, it looks BETTER than a lot of more expensive threads. -With DMC floss, you don’t have to worry about dye lots, the colors are consistent. The cons: -It’s a strandable thread, meaning it lays best if you separate the individual plies, place them back together, then stitch. You can customize your coverage depending on how many plies you use. Some people don’t like this additional step in the stitching process. -It can tangle easily! There’s a method to using it, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature, like threading your needle. Day 5: Thread types 🧵 There are many types of thread to choose from in the needlepoint world. With different types of fiber, including cotton, silks, wools, silk/wool blends, and specialty fibers such as velvets and sparkly threads, there can almost be too many options when you’re getting started! When selecting threads for your canvas, first determine if you have a 13 mesh or an 18 mesh canvas, as this will determine which threads will work best with your canvas mesh. Then, think through whether you need a more durable fiber such as a cotton or wool for items that will see regular use, like key fobs or belts. For needlepoint ornaments or items that will be framed, less durable fibers such as pure silk can be used without worrying about durability. 13 mesh canvases work great with DMC 3 cotton or Silk & Ivory (a silk/wool blend). 18 mesh canvases work great with DMC 5 cotton, Pepper Pot silk, Essentials (a silk/wool blend), or Vineyard Silk. For any fiber that you’re working with, keeping hold of the tag that tells you which type and size of fiber you have, as well as the color number (and dye lot, if applicable!), is very helpful in case you’re running low and need more. Because dye lotted fibers have slight color variations from one dye lot to the next, it’s recommended to buy all of the skeins you’ll need for a project at the same time, checking to ensure they’re all the same dye lot. This will hopefully minimize dye lot related stress down the road! Our shop attendants are always happy to help you find the right threads for your project! And yes, needlepoint absolutely counts. Needlepoint is canvas embroidery, which means every stitch you place is part of a tradition that’s been calming busy minds and creating beauty for centuries. Which means this thing you love… 
…this thing you reach for when the world feels loud… 
…this thing you do “just for fun”… …is actually part of something much bigger.
 Embroidery has always shown up in moments like this in history —
when life moves too fast,
when people feel overwhelmed,
when beauty feels scarce.
 Because stitching does something modern life doesn’t:

It slows your breathing.
It gives your hands purpose.
It lets your mind rest without going blank. You’re not zoning out. 
You’re dropping in.
 And maybe that’s why needlepoint is having such a quiet resurgence right now.

Not because it’s trendy.
But because it’s human.
 Every stitch says:
• I can take my time
• I can make something lasting
• I don’t have to rush to be worthy
 So no — needlepoint isn’t “extra.”
