I hear this a lot. Here's the thing though — When my 4-year-old has a meltdown and nurses, she's not avoiding learning to self-regulate - and I’m not either. At the age of 4, the part of her brain that handles big emotions is still under construction, and won't be fully developed until she's in her mid-twenties. Here's what's actually happening when she nurses after a meltdown: Her stress hormones (cortisol) drop while oxytocin—the love hormone—rises in both of us. This helps us both feel calmer and more connected. Her nervous system shifts from "fight or flight" into "rest and calm." She's getting sensory input that helps her overwhelmed system reorganize. And if her blood sugar crashed (hello, meltdown trigger), she's getting the nutrition she needs. In other words, her brain is literally using my body to co-regulate, because she can’t just “calm down” on her own. Breastfeeding isn't a crutch. It's a bridge. I'm lending her my regulated nervous system until hers can do more of the work on its own. One day she won't need this anymore. But today? Today she does. And that's completely normal and healthy. 💞 It breaks my heart that we expect young children to have emotional skills their brains aren't even capable of yet. 😢 #ExtendedBreastfeeding #NormalizeBreastfeeding #GentleParenting #CoRegulation #BreastfeedingToddler #AttachmentParenting

✨ Same goal, different language. A big difference in connection. As pediatric therapists, the words we choose matter. Directives like “put your shoes on” may get the job done, but curiosity-based language like “I wonder…” or “I notice…” invites collaboration, builds regulation, and supports autonomy. 💬 Which version do you respond better to? Try shifting your language this week and let us know what changes you notice! #pediatricOT #emotionalregulation #strengthbased #languageisconnection #occupationaltherapy #therapytips #regulationstartswithconnection

👉 Low Rate Mobility (£26.90 a week) For children who can walk but need extra guidance or supervision outdoors. . Examples: No road safety awareness → runs into traffic. Bolts, absconds, or wanders off. Needs constant 1:1 adult supervision outside. Anxiety/sensory overload causes refusal to walk. . 👉 High Rate Mobility (£71 a week) For children who cannot walk, can’t walk safely, or cannot walk repeatedly/in reasonable time. Examples: Needs a wheelchair or buggy for most journeys. Can walk only a few metres before pain, fatigue, or collapse. Walking takes much longer than a typical child. Severe behavioural, sensory, or physical difficulties mean they can’t travel safely without full support. The DWP look at safety, distance, time, repetition, and supervision. It’s not just “can they walk?” it’s whether they can walk safely, reliably, repeatedly, and in reasonable time. . 👉 Template sentence you can lift: “My child can physically walk short distances but not safely, repeatedly, or in reasonable time. They require 1:1 adult supervision and a buggy/wheelchair for longer journeys. This is significantly more than a same-age child.” . Grab the DLA Answer Bank (100+ sample answers). Link in bio to download. 📌 Save this before you write your mobility section. 📌 Share with a SEN parent who’s confused about rates. 📌 Follow @AutismLifeJournal for calm, clear help with DLA, EHCPs & SEN parenting. . #DLAhelp #DLAclaim #DLAsupport #DLArenewal #SENParenting #SENDhelp #SENDcommunity #SENMumLife #SpecialNeedsParenting #ParentCarer #AutismSupport #AutismParents #AutismUK #MobilityNeeds #HighRateMobility #LowRateMobility #ExtraSupervision #NoDangerAwareness #SENresources #SupportNotSilence #UKParents

I truly don’t think we can have enough social stories in our home. We have one really popular series we love - but we’re always looking for more. So I was so excited to discover this new series! ‼️Comment REAL for a link to shop these books. ‼️ The titles in this series fill in some gaps in our collection, including one about learning to ride a bike and another about having surgery for the first time. We want more! Thanks to the creators for sharing these with us. ❤️ #earlychildhood #preschool #parentingtips #kidsbooks

Solutions for sensory seeking kids’ behaviors 👇 When I notice these behaviors in my sensory seeking child, I promptly look for ways to help support her sensory needs, in order to regulate her emotions. Here are a few examples! Clingy (climbing all over you, wants to be held) 👉 Offer exercises that provide physical connection and deep pressure input, such as compression hugs. Aggressive (head butting, hitting or pinching) 👉 Do breathing exercises with tools that provide visual feedback, like a breathing ball or Calmee. 🐛 Hyperactive (bouncing off the walls, won’t sit still) 👉 Build obstacle courses that include jumping, climbing, running, and crashing. Irritable (unusually sensitive or defensive) 👉 Provide vestibular input through swinging or spinning them around. Loud (speaking fast at a high volume, uncontrollably) 👉 Provide materials with interesting tactile input like play dough, slime, or stress balls. This can help kids calm down and play quietly. Overstimulated (stressed or anxious) 👉 Create a cozy space that provides a sense of security and calmness, like a tent or canopy. Please note, every child has their own sensory preferences and interest levels in various activities! This is what works for us (right now 😄). Follow @thecalmcaterpillar for more tips 💚 Hope this helps 🫶🫶
