They actually only help for a short amount of time, and you usually end up having to do the behavior again and again. This reduces our ability to tolerate anxiety and discomfort and actually makes our anxiety from OCD way worse. Instead of relying on these quick fixes, it is more helpful to seek treatment from an OCD specialist. They will be able to give you helpful and effective tools to manage your symptoms, and even give you enough knowledge and support that your symptoms can reduce drastically. I used to think that the only escape from OCD’s torment was to avoid anything that could possibly trigger it. So, slowly but surely, I began to pull back from doing the things I loved. It seemed like an easy trade at first. If I just skip this one party, then I won’t have to spend the entire next day replaying every memory from it...If I never meet anyone new, then there will be no interactions to second-guess whether or not I caused harm...If I never make memories, there will be no memories to check, replay, and wonder if they’re even real... Slippery slope. I continued bargaining away pieces of my life, a little at a time, in the hope that it would bring me peace. But the peace OCD promised never came. All it ever did was shrink my life and allow OCD’s hold over me to grow. True recovery from OCD’s vicious cycle didn’t come until I found specialized OCD treatment, called ERP (exposure response prevention) therapy with NOCD.com.
