Sonic Youth didn’t use a lot of pedals. Most of the Time they were clean with amps cranked up.
My surf noise rock are quite different : reverb pedal and bridge pedal. I don’t know why people comments Sonic Youth on them.

MX-80 is an eclectic American art-rock band founded in 1974 in Bloomington, Indiana, United States, by guitarist Bruce Anderson. Considered "one of the most out of step but prescient bands of its time", MX-80's signature sound consisted of breakneck metallic guitar combined with atonal chord structure, cross-rhythmic percussion and dispassionate vocals.
Post-punk wired with No Wave abrasion, Beefheart-level anti-blues guitar, and a nervy, almost academic obsession with rhythm.
Notoriously difficult to categorize, the band has been labeled noise rock, post-punk, acid punk, and heavy-metal. MX-80's sonic melange set the stage for bands such as Swans, Sonic Youth, Codeine, and Shellac.
Their second Ralph release, Crowd Control (1981), was recorded at New York's Celebration Studios.
""Obsessive Devotion" is so based on guitar feedback (+ dreamy vocals) that we can legitimately consider it the first shoegaze song. Unlike the other candidates for that status, I would say that this first one meets all the basic requirements. MBV before MBV, Slowdive before Slowdive. In 1981. This is an album that should be mentioned more often in discussions of the best post-punk albums. Although influenced of Joy Division, Pere Ubu and Capt. Beefheart, MX-80 Sound further raised both decibel and complexity levels in their creation.
