EL#NormanLear was an genius/evil genius who toyed exclusively with the #thirdrail. His delivery was so deft that the first he targeted with his #satire were the academics and the activists. And he got em.

To this day many call #MichaelStivic a hero and #ArchieBunker a racist. (Even after seeing Lear's #objectlesson in this vid.) He gave Lionel the brilliance here that you don't see in scripts today.

The genius was Archie's mouth as racist but his heart as true as Edith's, with love for any and every. Even more consciously than Edith. The #evilgenius, tho, made #GeorgeJefferson not only a racist, but also a blind money-hungry striver for the #uppereastside life, one sealed tight (esp to his kind) to this day.

And I think Lear knew that Michael would be a fixture to this day- the rad progressive, blind & patronizing but with good intentions that can't get past the arrogance of saving the world. The one thing Lear reinforced so brutally in the character-caricatures "ike and Gloria" was that blindness: the exact same blindness we see in this vid & in the loudest activists today.

Lear told the story of race AND redemption in America with a non-racist racist as hero. 🤯 He, himself, complicated that legacy easily, though, when he forced America's first strong black father off of #GoodTimes, to cash in on #minstrelsy.

In battle, you want Archie, a foul mouth ever defeated by the heart he is scared to show but can't hide. And you want Edith and Lionel.

Aside: #JeanStapleton and #CarrollOConnor were the elite of all time among American and world actors. They brought a #QueensNYC that was exactly true to a what I would live 20 years after the show.
