In 1949, Indian mathematician D. R. Kaprekar described a numerical process that revealed a fixed result for four digit numbers in base ten. That result is 6174, now known as Kaprekar’s Constant. The process works as follows. Take any four digit number with at least two different digits. Rearrange its digits to form the largest possible number and the smallest possible number, then subtract the smaller from the larger. Repeat the same steps with each new result. No matter which valid four digit number you start with, the sequence reaches 6174 in a finite number of steps. Once reached, the process becomes stable because rearranging 6174 gives 7641 and 1467, and their difference is 6174 again. This behavior is specific to four digit numbers in the base ten number system. Other digit lengths can have similar constants, but 6174 is unique to four digit decimal numbers and always acts as the final fixed point of the process. —————— #viral #math #science #news #Nurtle

In 1960, psychologists Eleanor J. Gibson and Richard D. Walk built an experimental setup known as the Visual Cliff to test depth perception in babies who had started crawling. The apparatus used a large glass platform placed over two checkerboard patterns. On one side the pattern sat directly beneath the glass surface, while the other side placed the pattern about a meter lower, creating the visual appearance of a drop. Babies between six and fourteen months old were placed on the platform and encouraged to crawl toward a caregiver standing on the opposite side. Many crawled across the shallow side but stopped at the edge of the section that appeared deep, refusing to cross even though the glass surface supported their weight. —————— #viral #science #psychology #news #Nurtle

Dressed for the dance in a polka-dot tuxedo? Trendy AND elegant! But that’s just the way we like to break it down in a South Carolina wetland. Though we hope our biologists are never breakin’ a leg. They may be rolling an ankle here and there on a cypress tree root or a clump of mud, but the wildlife to be found in this biodiverse landscape is well worth the journey. In our Francis Marion PARCA (Priority Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Area) in South Carolina, ARC Biologists put their best foot forward to protect species like spotted turtles, gopher frogs, northern pinesnakes, and more. This PARCA is the site of our longest-running field projects, and it’s no wonder why. Here, longleaf pine ecosystems, maritime forests, bottomland hardwood swamp, and salt marshes fill the land with incredible “riches,” in the habitat sense. Each of these ecosystems supports a variety of adapted organisms, and it’s because of this that we’ve named this place one of the most important areas for amphibian and reptile conservation in the United States. Rather than approaching conservation with a one-by-one, species focus, we look to the areas these animals truly rely on and ask, “What amount of land, if protected or restored, could have the biggest positive impact for these species?” These are the questions that allow for habitat restorations that can elevate an entire ecosystem’s functions. By focusing on PARCAs, we can create conservation plans that, over time, result in rebuilt critical habitats across the entire country. The jig isn’t up yet! Every year, we’ll take greater strides to protect imperiled amphibians and reptiles. Want to be the first to hear updates about that work? Portuguese goalkeeper Anthony Lopes deliberately went down during a match to force a stoppage, giving several teammates the chance to break their Ramadan fast at sunset. The incident took place while Lopes was playing for FC Nantes. A group of Muslim players were waiting for the exact time to eat and drink, which is often difficult to manage during live matches without an official pause. By staying on the ground and calling medical staff, Lopes created a standard injury break. During the stoppage, teammates briefly hydrated and ate on the sideline before returning to play. Temporary pauses during Ramadan are increasingly coordinated by clubs and officials across European football, but this moment stood out because the stoppage was initiated by a non-fasting teammate to support the squad. —————— #viral #football #sports #news #Nurtle

The post is a 56-second sports highlight video from Nurtle, a channel specializing in viral athletic moments, where Japan’s men’s volleyball team retrieves three 119 km/h spikes (including Tomita’s block and Yamamoto’s floor saves) into intense rallies, instantly resetting the play for a high-intensity effect that drove 18.8 million views. Replies mix awe with technical praise, notably fans hailing the “omnipresent” libero in the red jersey as a “monster” for his reflexes, while others reference “Haikyuu” parallels or joke about “Rolling Thunder” saves, reflecting a deep appreciation for Japanese discipline. Peer-reviewed studies, such as a 2025 sports kinetics meta-analysis and 2024 research on volleyball floor defense, show elite liberos reduce court-hit probability by 85-94% via anticipatory positioning like the split-step over years of training, but the rapid-fire montage in the video condenses these rallies for entertainment, risking an oversimplification of the physical exhaustion involved in professional play.

Read Caption 🤍 He trusted the waves the way a child trusts sleep. No fear. No questions. Just surrender. And we do the same with time. We wake up, chase things, make plans, love people… as if tomorrow signed a contract with us. “None of us asks where we want to stop” means we live like the road is endless. We don’t think about the last conversation. The last hug. The last sunrise. We assume there will always be one more. The turtle didn’t know which wave would be his final one. And that’s the part that hurts neither do we. It’s not just about death. It’s about how quietly life carries us forward… until one day, it doesn’t. That line is really a reminder: Don’t just let time carry you. Feel the water while you’re still swimming 🌊 #relatable #foryou #seaturtle #turtle #life

Did you know harbor seals have unique patterns like fingerprints? 🦭🐾 🎥 @michaelboyyd No two spotted harbor seals look exactly the same. Some have dark spots on light fur, others light spots on dark fur, and the size, shape, and density of spots vary between individuals and populations. Even pups can have different patterns from adults, and the colors may fade or change slightly with age. 🦭🦦🐙🐠🐢 Also pups can swim almost as soon as they’re born 🥹🤏🏻, adults can swim upside down, and often rest on rocks in goofy “banana” poses with flippers in the air. 🦭🍌🏝 If you read the caption, please comment your country’s flag or any flag you like! 🏳️🏴🏴‍☠️🏁🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🫶🏻 #ocean #underwater #coral #coralreef #oceanlife #marinebiology #marineconservation #restoration #coralrestoration #harborseal #anemones #dolphins #sponge #otter #conservation #diving #snorkling #antarctica #sealpup #penguins #whale #whales #whaleshark #humpbackwhale #seaslug #turtle #seaturtle #manatee #oceanthemajesty #killerwhale
