Tchaikovsky didn’t choose the celesta for the Sugar Plum Fairy by accident. In 1891, he discovered it in Paris, became obsessed, and wrote to his publisher asking to buy one in secret, afraid that Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov might steal the effect before the premiere. The plan worked, the audience in Saint Petersburg had never heard that sound. No one knew where it came from. Even so, critics destroyed the entire ballet. Tchaikovsky died 10 months later believing he had created a failure.

The celesta and the glass harmonica should never be in the same sentence. The celesta was invented in 1886 and is mostly associated with The Nutcracker. The glass harmonica is 260 years old, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven wrote for it, Marie Antoinette took lessons, and George Washington heard it live in 1765 in colonial Virginia. What you hear in the video are fused quartz bowls, hand-tuned, spinning on an محور. The sound comes from the friction between glass and wet skin. There is no amplification.

William Zeitler spent 14 years researching the history of the glass harmonica before publishing a book about it. He discovered the instrument in 1995 and was one of the first to relearn it professionally in the 20th century. He has performed at the Kennedy Center and alongside the Blue Man Group. Tchaikovsky’s choice is not accidental, it is the only piece in the classical repertoire where these two forgotten instruments could share the same stage.
