Pruning Lime Light Hydrangeas
For most of the plants in my landscape I refer to the experts for their maintenance. I purchased my lime lights from @provenwinners (not a sponsored post I just love their hydrangeas).
The recommended time to prune lime lights is late winter or early spring. I love the look of the dried blooms in the landscape thus I leave them as long as possible. I also use the dried blooms in Fall and Winter floral arrangements.
⚠️ Not all hydrangeas require pruning as some grow on old wood. If you are not sure please do your research and look up your plants first.
I am located in zone 8a and prune as soon as I see the first sign of hydrangeas buds. This is a great time to prune as I can clearly see where to cut.
The recommendation for pruning lime lights is to cut only 1/3 of the plant’s branches back. Anything more can result in weak branches and unable to hold the weightof large blooms. As lime lights bloom on new wood, over cutting can also result in little to no blooms.
Using sharp and clean pruning shears, I like to cut at a 45 degree angle just above the bud. Working with heavy clay soil, I add fresh organic matter like rich organic compost and top with a balanced slow release fertilizer.
