Instead of chasing debris, the system allows plastic to drift into it, where it is concentrated and periodically extracted by support vessels. This approach makes it possible to operate continuously across massive areas like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. In addition to ocean systems, they also deploy “Interceptors” in rivers, which are automated machines that capture plastic before it reaches the ocean. Since a large percentage of marine pollution originates from rivers, this upstream strategy is a critical part of the overall plan. The long-term goal is ambitious: removing up to 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040.
