It is named after, and often follows, the spectacular Dyke that King Offa ordered to be constructed in the 8th century, probably to divide his Kingdom of Mercia from rival kingdoms in what is now Wales. You can walk the full length of it, which spans the entire Welsh border! ✌🏼🦊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 @offasdykepath ➖ The trail starts in the picturesque market town of Hay-on-Wye in Wales, known as the 'town of books' it's so quaint, and it's LGBTQ+ friendly with a lot of queer history and a great base to explore the Marches and Offa's Dyke! ❤️🏳️‍🌈 @nationaltrailsuk ➖ It's a 7.4km moderate hike that is quintessentially British, with rolling hills, gorgeous woodland and oh so green fields. Finish up in Hay and grab some food at one of the wonderful cafes or restaurants, a pint in the pub and wander around the many bookshops! Day 1 | Offa’s Dyke National Trail 🏞️ We start where land meets sea.. at the Offa’s Dyke monument on the beach at Prestatyn. The Welsh Coast Path is now behind us, 870 miles of salt, wind, struggle and joy… and ahead lies something very different. Today, we turn inland and begin following an ancient line carved into the landscape over a thousand years ago. Prestatyn itself has deep roots. Long before it became a seaside town, this area was settled in Roman times, sitting near the military road linking Deva Victrix (Chester) to the west. The town’s name likely comes from Old English, meaning “priest’s farm”, and nearby hills still hold Iron Age forts that watched over this coastline centuries before beach huts and promenades ever existed. Offa’s Dyke was built in the 8th century, during the reign of King Offa of Mercia (r. 757–796).. a powerful Anglo-Saxon ruler who wanted a clear boundary between his kingdom and the Welsh kingdoms to the west. The dyke stretches roughly 177 miles, though historians believe it was never a single continuous wall, but a mix of earthworks, natural barriers, and intimidation tactics. Random fact: Offa was so influential he minted his own gold coins.. and one surviving coin even copies an Islamic dinar, complete with Arabic script. Power, prestige, and propaganda were very much alive in the Dark Ages. So this is the next chapter. The coast fades behind us, the hills rise ahead, and history runs beneath our boots. There aren’t many places you can have a swim in two rivers at once, followed by by a pub tea, chips or a picnic. Well in Leintwardine you can. Swim in the River Lugg and to the confluence of River Teme. This spot is in the most scenic of places. I think the Lugg is colder - see what you think. It’s such a beautiful place, open fields, plenty of river beaches, a weir and if you’re brave enough, a tyre swing.
