Wildlife care specialists describe her adorable little guy as spunky and curious. He also has quite the appetite and has been nursing more than the typical okapi calf. In September, our Giant Eland Emmy Lou sadly passed away, leaving behind a calf that was born on September 8th. Our team at the Okapi Barn knew that it would take strategy, patience, and lots of love to ensure Emmy Lou’s newest child, Fancy, would continue to grow strong and healthy. A huge thank you to Katelin, our hoofstock keeper, who made this video to show you just how much care and dedication go into working with Fancy and keeping her happy & healthy! ⭐ This was a brand new achievement for our team here at Zoo Miami, as Fancy is the first-ever hand reared baby Giant Eland we have cared for! 🍼 By stimulating her mom’s natural feeding position and sensations, our team has been able to provide Fancy with a new but familiar feeding experience. 💛 We’re so excited to continue caring for her and making momma Emmy Lou proud.
