FOIs Zillow a monopoly? Fortune recently spoke to CEO Jeremy Wacksman about how he’s playing offense and defense—at the same time.
Wacksman left Microsoft’s Xbox division to join Zillow in 2009 as home prices were falling amid the subprime mortgage crisis. He became CEO last August amid an entirely different crisis—one spurred by rising prices, higher mortgage rates, and very tight supply.
“The thing we do is we try and continue to make that process better and easier for those that are buying, because then as more buyers come, it’ll be better for everyone,” he says in the latest #LeadershipNext podcast. “The category is very hard. It’s still very broken.”
Wacksman explains why open access to real estate listings is critical for buyers and sellers and what’s at stake in the industry lawsuit challenging that transparency.

Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, explained that China is playing the AI game with a different strategy compared with the United States — and that difference matters for how the global AI landscape evolves. He noted that while the U.S. tends to focus on closed-source models, proprietary research, and frontier technologies like AGI, China emphasizes open models, broad application, and integration across society. Chinese AI projects often target consumer apps, robotics, and practical deployments that can scale everywhere instead of concentrating only on high-end research labs — and this gives those systems wider adoption because many countries choose accessible, open-weight AI over models that are expensive and restricted.
Schmidt also pointed out that Chinese developers are pushing AI across everyday industry, not just chasing theoretical breakthroughs, and that their open-weight, lower-cost models are exactly the kind of technology that budget-conscious nations and developers are adopting at scale. While the U.S. may lead in certain advanced capabilities, China’s emphasis on practical deployment, open access, and pervasive integration creates a fundamentally different path where AI becomes national infrastructure, not just a research frontier.
