✨ The Legacy of Operation Breadbasket and MLK ✨ Did you know that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated before a pivotal march tied to Operation Breadbasket and economic justice efforts in Washington, D.C.? Dr. King’s assassination on April 4, 1968, came while he was organizing the Poor People’s Campaign, a movement addressing poverty across racial lines. This campaign, deeply connected to the work of Operation Breadbasket, planned to bring thousands to Washington, D.C., to demand fair jobs, wages, and resources for marginalized communities. The Poor People’s Campaign, closely tied to the goals of Operation Breadbasket, included plans for a “Resurrection City” march in Washington, D.C. This campaign sought to bring attention to systemic poverty affecting African Americans, Native Americans, Latinos, and poor white Americans. Operation Breadbasket was instrumental in this initiative, focusing on economic justice and advocating for the redistribution of resources to marginalized communities. However, Dr. King’s assassination delayed and profoundly impacted the movement. 🤝🏾We must continue the fight and support those who are in the trenches. 🤝🏾 #EconomicJustice #OperationBreadbasket #CivilRightsMovement #Equality #LegacyLivesOn #liberation

Thanks Viola and crew for easily providing this clip. I (Iqua) was at the Operation Breadbasket conference as a young teen when Cannonball played Country Preacher and then Jesse brought down the house. Rev. Jesse Jackson was appointed as the director of the Chicago branch by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1966. He set up Operation Breadbasket headquarters right in my neighborhood - Hyde Park/Kenwood. And then there was the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. Say what you will... and many have said a lot- he was one of King's operatives and he knew how to operate! The chant "I am Somebody' filled churches, schools and rallies. His campaign for president opened eyes and doors. This man made a difference. Now Jesse rest with MLK, Rev. CT Vivian, Rev. Joseph Lowery, Rev. Ralph Abernathy and all of those warriors and strategists who helped lift us. Remember ... "KEEP HOPE ALIVE" RIP Rev. Jesse Jackson. Job well done! 🕊️

Reverend Jesse Jackson iconic chant “I am — Somebody” Jesse Jackson first used the “I Am – Somebody” mantra in 1963 in Chicago while working with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and Martin Luther King Jr.’s Operation Breadbasket. The phrase was part of his early efforts to uplift and empower Black communities, particularly in the fight for economic justice. However, the speech became widely known after he delivered it publicly on October 27, 1972, at Wattstax, a benefit concert held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. The event was organized by Stax Records to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the 1965 Watts riots and to celebrate African American culture and resilience. Jackson had been using the “I Am – Somebody” chant as a motivational tool in his civil rights activism, particularly during his work with Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity), which he founded in 1971. 🎥 Reverend Jesse Jackson | Born October 8, 1941 (age 83) Greenville, South Carolina #revjessejackson #jessejackson #ismsomebody #blackhistorymonth #civilrightsmovement

Part 1: I had the honor of being a speaker at #InvestFest2024 here in Atlanta, GA, alongside my business partner, @AshleyDBell. Thank you, Rosezette Upshaw, for moderating this discussion. Many people don’t know much about my father’s leadership and participation in economic campaigns to build a black economic infrastructure during the civil rights movement, through “Operation Breadbasket,” which created 50 million plus in new income in the black community in 1967, which is around a half of billon dollars today. On the night before his assassination, my father called for a bank-in encouraging the Black people in Memphis to take their money out of the downtown mainstream bank and deposit it in Tri-State, the black bank as a means of building a greater economic base. My grandfather, Daddy King, was a board member of Citizens Trust Bank, one of the first black-owned banks in the USA. That’s why I joined forces with Ashley to continue the legacy of creating economic access and wealth-building opportunities for Black people through @Redemptionholdingco, which is the first time a group of black investors is acquiring a white-owned bank (Holladay Bank and Trust in Utah) and converting it to a MDI (Black-owned Bank.) #bankblack #EconomicJustice #ShiftTheCulture #InvestFest #MLK #MartinLutherKingJr

Jackson was born in Greenville, South Carolina, and rose to prominence in the Civil Rights era, participating in demonstrations alongside the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. His activism spanned decades, including two runs for the Democratic presidential nomination, in 1984 and 1988. Jackson began his work as an organizer with the Congress of Racial Equality, participating in marches and sit-ins. He attended North Carolina A&T State University and graduated with a degree in sociology. He began rallying student support for King during his divinity studies at Chicago Theological Seminary and participated in the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery march in Alabama. Shortly afterward, Jackson joined the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, or SCLC, to work alongside King full time. He drew praise from King as a young man running the SCLC’s economic development and empowerment program, Operation Breadbasket. The list goes on about his accomplishments and contributions. "His Lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." #firstame_losangeles #fame_losangeles #firsttoserve_famelosangeles

🌟 Honoring the Legacy of Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. 🌟 Today, we mourn the passing and celebrate the life of Rev. Jesse Jackson, a towering figure in the American civil rights movement whose work spanned decades and touched millions. At the age of 84, Reverend Jackson’s legacy is one of courage, resilience, and unrelenting hope for justice and equality. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, Jackson rose from the segregated South to become one of the most influential civil rights leaders of the 20th and early 21st centuries. He marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., helped lead economic justice efforts through Operation Breadbasket, and worked tirelessly to expand opportunities for Black communities. Rev. Jackson made history as one of the first African American leaders to run serious presidential campaigns in 1984 and 1988, breaking barriers and inspiring future generations of Black leaders. His iconic “Keep Hope Alive” message captured the spirit of a community striving for dignity, power, and opportunity. He founded and led organizations like Operation PUSH and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, championing economic justice, voting rights, and civil rights for Black Americans and all marginalized peoples. His work expanded social justice movements and helped shape a more inclusive national conversation about equality. Rev. Jackson’s life reminds us that the fight for justice is long and requires unwavering dedication. His legacy inspires us to continue the work of equity, dignity, and opportunity for all. 💛 May we honor his memory by prioritizing justice, uplifting one another, and keeping hope alive. 📍 Visit the Black Student Success Center and follow @BlackStudentUnionLBCC for resources, events, and ways to engage with the legacy of civil rights leaders like Rev. Jesse Jackson’s work didn’t begin or end with one moment. He worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr. through the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, where economic justice became central to the movement. In 1966, Jackson led Operation Breadbasket in Chicago, pushing for jobs, fair wages, and community power. After leaving the SCLC in 1971, he founded Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) and later helped build the Rainbow Coalition, unifying grassroots movements across the country. He eventually ran for President, bringing civil rights and economic justice to the national political stage.
