When light enters the eye, it first passes through the cornea, which provides most of the eye’s refractive power by bending the light rays toward the pupil. The light then passes through the aqueous humor and the lens, which fine-tunes the focus by changing its shape in a process called accommodation, allowing us to see objects clearly at different distances. Finally, the light travels through the vitreous humor and strikes the retina, where photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) convert the light into electrical signals that are transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. Refraction—the bending of light when it passes from one medium to another—is essential in this process; without proper refraction, images would be blurry, as seen in vision defects like myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness), which are corrected by glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. This changes the plane of focus in a way a standard lens cannot replicate. The result is a razor-thin band of sharpness with heavy blur above and below the frame. This is called miniature faking. Shallow depth of field is something our brains associate with close-up photography of small objects. When that same optical signature appears in a wide city shot, the brain interprets the scene as a miniature model rather than a real environment. Digital filters attempt to recreate this effect in post-production. The tilt-shift lens produces it optically in camera, which is why the result looks different.
