I usually don’t like the advice to “just be positive.” But sometimes, it makes sense. It all depends on how you define “positive.” Having a positive attitude doesn’t mean you’re blindly optimistic. It’s actually strategic & growth-focused, what research calls an “optimistic explanatory style.” You don’t ignore reality. You’re pragmatic, rational. AND, you reframe unhelpful thoughts to focus on growth. This technique is called ‘cognitive reframing,’ based on principles of the cognitive model of behavior. Here’s how you can apply it: BEFORE a big moment, shift from self-doubt to preparation: → How can I best prepare? → What can I offer that adds value? AFTER a setback, use growth-oriented questions: → What can I learn from this? → How could I approach it differently next time? This technique helps you create mental space to turn challenges into opportunities. It helps you face obstacles with resilience and stay focused on progress.
