My father developed a rare blood disease that required a bone marrow transplant and he did not survive the chemo required to have it. My uncle who had IBD before me was found to have stage 4 liver cancer and died a month later. The most thoughtful gift I've ever received came from a 16-year-old. Ella was my first podcast guest. We bonded over chronic illness. I told her about the day my ostomy bag exploded in a coffee shop bathroom. Poop everywhere. I cleaned the floor and walls so the next person wouldn't walk into it, then rushed out trying to be invisible. Sat in my car and cried. This week she sent me a package. A hand-painted mini shoebox. The exact Nikes I ruined that day. My name on the soles. And her Wonder Woman ostomy cover from when she was a kid. She picked it to feel strong. Wore it even though it was too big. Kept it by her bed. When her ostomy reversed, she threw everything away except this. She sent it to me. "This has always been where I pull my strength from. I wanted to share it with you." I opened these gifts after the hardest three weeks of my life. Finally at my mom's after brutal complications. Just sat there and cried. Ella is 16 years old.
