🏞️ 1. Location & Setting
The monastery is dramatically built into a vertical cliff 900 meters above sea level.
It’s located near Nikšić, about 50 km from Podgorica.
The Upper Monastery is the iconic cliff-side structure; the Lower Monastery has accommodations and parking.
🧗 2. Getting There
Roads are narrow and winding — drive carefully or consider a guided tour.
You can hike from the Lower to Upper Monastery (30–45 minutes uphill).
Free parking is available at the Lower Monastery.
🦶 3. Pilgrimage Tradition
Many visitors walk barefoot as a sign of devotion.
People often sleep outdoors overnight, especially before religious holidays.
The site attracts Orthodox Christians, but all faiths are welcome.

BYOstrog Monastery is one of the most important Serbian Orthodox monasteries. It is a respected religious site of pilgrimage in Montenegro and the Balkans that is dedicated to Saint Basil of Ostrog (Sveti Vasilije Ostroški), who was buried here.
The monastery was carved out of the vertical mountainside of Ostroška Greda during the 17th century when Montenegrins were fighting against the mighty Ottoman Empire. It celebrates its annual feast day on the 12th of May, coinciding with the death of St. Basil on the 29th of April in the Orthodox calendar, which equates to the 12th of May in the Gregorian calendar.
