THBack in August 1999, Hotmail suffered one of the biggest web security breaches of that era. A flaw in its login system allowed anyone to access any account simply by typing “eh” as the password.
The vulnerability was revealed by a hacker group known as Hackers Unite, and within minutes, millions of accounts were left exposed. Microsoft quickly fixed the issue and denied claims that the flaw was an intentional backdoor.
The incident is still remembered today as a major warning in cybersecurity history and a reminder of how a single weak point can compromise an entire platform.
